Pre-Recycling Technology reduces waste and improves efficiency

At SXSW in Austin, Texas, a small machine was quietly crushing plastic bags into dense blocks. The demonstration wasn’t a recycling machine in the traditional sense — it was something different. It was a “pre-recycling” system designed to solve one of recycling’s biggest problems before the material even reaches a recycling facility.

Ivan Arbouzov, President, Founder and CEO of Clear Drop, Inc., demonstrated the company’s technology during SXSW events in Austin. The Clear Drop system compresses soft plastic — commonly known in the industry as plastic film — into dense blocks that are easier to transport and process for recycling.

Soft plastic is one of the most difficult materials to recycle. Plastic bags and film packaging often clog recycling machinery and are inefficient to transport because they consist mostly of air. As a result, much of this material ends up in landfills or as roadside waste.

Clear Drop’s approach is what Arbouzov calls “pre-recycling” — creating appliances that serve as collection and compression points before materials reach recycling facilities.

Instead of transporting loose bags of plastic film, the Clear Drop machine compresses the material into Soft Plastic Blocks (SPB) weighing roughly four to five pounds. These compressed blocks can be transported more efficiently and fed directly into recycling grinders without causing the clogging issues that loose plastic film often creates.

The system also uses a special plastic envelope that is recycled together with the compressed material when it is transported to partner recycling facilities.

A Missing Link In The Recycling Chain

Ivan Arbouzov, Founder and CEO of Clear Drop, demonstrating the Soft Plastic Block created by the company’s pre-recycling system at SXSW in Austin, Texas

Arbouzov describes Clear Drop as filling a gap in the recycling process — the space between when plastic is discarded and when it reaches recycling facilities.

“There’s a kind of big hole in between that sucks in the majority of the material before they even get it to the recycling plant,” he explains. The goal of Clear Drop is to shorten the distance between disposal and recycling and make it easier for people and organizations to recycle soft plastics.

Clear Drop currently operates with two business streams:

Consumer systems for households

Commercial systems for businesses and institutions

Hospitals are a particularly interesting use case because large amounts of clean polyethylene packaging are used in medical environments. This plastic is high quality and well suited for recycling if it can be properly collected and transported.

Beyond Plastic: Organic Waste Systems

Clear Drop is also developing systems for organic waste collection and storage. These systems allow organic waste to be stored without odor for extended periods and then transferred to composting systems or organic recycling facilities.

By separating organic waste and soft plastics from general waste streams, Arbouzov believes recycling efficiency can be significantly improved. Removing these materials from the general waste stream leaves paper, metal, glass, and hard plastics — materials that are much easier to recycle effectively.

Clear Drop’s broader vision is to develop technologies that address multiple waste and disposal challenges, helping reduce landfill waste and improve recycling outcomes through better collection and material handling systems.

Sex education needs a platform not a search engine

When Cindy Gallop launched MakeLoveNotPorn more than a decade ago, her goal was simple but radical: to separate real-world sex from porn and encourage healthier conversations about intimacy, relationships and consent. Now, she is taking that mission even further with the launch of MakeLoveNotPorn Academy, a global aggregator platform for sex education resources designed for lifelong learning.

MakeLoveNotPorn Academy aims to become a global hub for sex education

The Academy is now live in early-stage beta and aims to become what Gallop describes as “the Google of sex education” — a searchable hub that organizes educational content for parents, teachers, young people and adults.

Why Sex Education Needs Its Own Platform

According to Gallop, one of the biggest problems in sex education today is not the lack of information — it is discoverability.

Search engines often censor or filter sexual health and education content, making it difficult for parents and educators to find reliable, fact-based resources. The result is that many young people end up learning about sex primarily through pornography rather than education.

MakeLoveNotPorn Academy aims to solve this by acting as a human-curated aggregator, where every educator and resource is vetted to ensure that content is:

Educational

Fact-based

Non-judgmental

Age-appropriate

Culturally sensitive

The platform allows users to search resources by age group, comfort level and cultural context, creating a structured approach to lifelong sex education.

From MakeLoveNotPorn To MakeLoveNotPorn Academy

This new platform builds on Gallop’s long-running work in the sex tech space. In a previous Tech Trends article, we explored the broader challenges and opportunities in the industry and why investment in sex tech is still often overlooked despite its massive social impact.

That article argued that sex tech is not just about products — it is about education, safety, relationships, consent, and culture. The launch of MakeLoveNotPorn Academy reinforces that argument by positioning sex education as infrastructure, not content.

A Human-Curated Model In An Algorithmic World

One of the most interesting aspects of the Academy is that it deliberately does not rely purely on algorithms.

Instead, the platform uses a 100% human-curation model, where educators and content are reviewed and approved manually. In a digital world dominated by algorithmic recommendation systems, this approach is intentionally different — prioritizing safety, context and educational value over engagement metrics.

The Academy is free to access, and operates on a membership and donation model to support operations and future development.

Sex Education As A Technology Platform

The launch of MakeLoveNotPorn Academy highlights a broader trend within the sex tech industry: the shift from devices and apps toward platforms, education, and digital ecosystems.

Sex tech is increasingly intersecting with:

EdTech

Online learning platforms

Community platforms

Creator economies

Digital health

AI and personalization

Content aggregation platforms

In that sense, MakeLoveNotPorn Academy is not just a sex education site — it is a knowledge platform, and potentially the first global aggregator dedicated entirely to sex education.

The Future Of Lifelong Sex Education

Sex education has traditionally been treated as something that happens once, in school, often awkwardly and incompletely. MakeLoveNotPorn Academy takes a very different view: sex education should be lifelong.

From early childhood conversations about bodies and boundaries, through teenage years, relationships, consent, communication, pleasure, aging, and long-term relationships — education around intimacy and relationships evolves throughout life.

If Gallop’s vision succeeds, MakeLoveNotPorn Academy could become a central hub for that lifelong learning journey.

And in doing so, it may help reshape not only sex education, but how we think about relationships, communication and intimacy in the digital age.

London and Texas strengthen innovation partnerships at SXSW 2026

By Laura Kobylecky

Jane Nelson, the Texas Secretary of State, made her enthusiasm for London clear during a lively SXSW event in Austin titled London Calling: Where pioneering ideas meet business opportunities. The event focused on strengthening business, technology, and innovation connections between London, the UK, and Texas.

The event was co-hosted by Here East, an innovation campus originally developed for the London 2012 Olympics that now houses global tech companies, startups, academic institutions, and creative organizations. Also hosting the event was CELL (Creative Experience Lab London), which supports research and development across technology, creativity, and culture in live experience sectors. Featured partners included Wise and Oury Clark, organizations that help businesses operate internationally and expand between the US and UK markets.

A Texas welcome with London ambitions

There were microphone issues when Nelson began speaking, but she quickly adapted, drawing on her experience as a former school teacher to project her voice across the room. She broke the ice by leading the audience in a loud Texas-style “Yee-haw,” immediately energizing the crowd and setting a collaborative tone for the evening.

Nelson spoke about her long personal connection with London and emphasized the historical and cultural ties between the UK and the United States. She described SXSW as a place where entrepreneurs, innovators, investors, and creatives can meet and build partnerships that shape future industries.

Texas Secretary of State Jane Nelson speaks at the London Calling event during SXSW in Austin.

Innovation, media, and immersive technology

After Nelson’s speech, Justin Diener, Co-Founder and CEO of Synapse Virtual Productions, joined Dr. Lora Markova of Loughborough University London for a discussion about immersive technology, media, and the future of storytelling.

Diener explained how media production now combines filmmaking, game engines, software development, and communication technology, allowing audiences to experience content in more interactive and immersive ways. He noted that students entering these industries are increasingly learning multiple overlapping skills rather than specializing in just one field.

Dr. Markova discussed what she called the “spillover effect,” where innovation happens at the intersection of industries such as technology, education, media, and entertainment. She emphasized that the future of immersive experiences will be driven not just by technology, but by collaboration across industries.

Collaboration and global partnerships

As the event concluded, attendees continued networking and discussing business opportunities, partnerships, and new projects. The overall theme of the evening was collaboration — between London and Texas, between industries, and between technology and creativity.

The London Calling event demonstrated how global innovation ecosystems are becoming increasingly connected, with cities like London and Austin working together to build future industries through partnerships, investment, and shared ideas.

And, as the audience learned early in the evening, sometimes international collaboration begins with a simple Texas “Yee-haw.”

Sleep apnea is emerging as a significant public health concern, with new data suggesting that millions may be living with undiagnosed conditions that could impact long-term health.

New research indicates that mild sleep apnea may be far more widespread than previously understood — and its health risks may be underestimated.

A large-scale analysis of sleep data has found that around one in five people in the UK may experience signs of mild sleep apnea, a condition that disrupts breathing during sleep and is increasingly linked to serious health outcomes.

The study, based on more than two million nights of anonymised sleep data, also points to a broader trend: sleep quality is gradually declining, with people sleeping less on average year over year.

Sleep Apnea Is More Than a Sleep Issue

Sleep apnea occurs when breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep, often without the individual being aware. While commonly associated with fatigue and poor sleep quality, its long-term implications are far more serious.

A growing body of research shows that sleep apnea is closely linked to cardiovascular and metabolic conditions, including increased risk of hypertension, atrial fibrillation, and Type 2 diabetes.

Recent findings published in Nature Digital Medicine further reinforce this concern. The study — which you can explore in this new scientific research on sleep apnea variability and cardiovascular risk highlights that it is not just the severity of sleep apnea that matters, but also how much breathing patterns fluctuate from night to night.

This variability may place individuals with so-called “mild” sleep apnea at a level of cardiovascular risk previously associated only with more severe cases.

Sleep apnea prevalence comparison across countries based on analysed sleep data

A Widespread and Underdiagnosed Condition

Globally, sleep apnea is estimated to affect around one billion people, making it one of the most common yet underdiagnosed health conditions.

The latest data suggests that prevalence increases significantly with age, particularly after 50, and that men are more likely to experience the condition than women — although risk rises for women after menopause.

Despite its prevalence, sleep apnea often goes undetected because symptoms can be subtle or mistaken for general fatigue, stress, or lifestyle-related sleep disruption.

Sleep Quality Is Gradually Declining

Beyond sleep apnea itself, the data reveals a broader deterioration in sleep health.

Average sleep duration has decreased year-on-year, accompanied by a slight drop in overall sleep quality scores. Seasonal variations also play a role, with shorter sleep durations typically recorded during summer months.

These patterns suggest that modern lifestyles — including stress, screen exposure, and irregular schedules — may be contributing to worsening sleep outcomes at a population level.

The Role of Connected Health Monitoring

The findings also highlight the growing role of connected health technologies in identifying sleep disorders earlier and tracking long-term trends.

Platforms such as Withings are part of a wider shift toward continuous, at-home health monitoring, where users can collect longitudinal data on sleep patterns, heart rate, and other key indicators.

While these tools are not a substitute for clinical diagnosis, they are increasingly being used to support preventative healthcare — helping both individuals and clinicians detect patterns that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Conclusion

Sleep apnea is no longer a niche or isolated condition — it is increasingly recognised as a widespread health issue with significant implications for long-term wellbeing.

As research continues to highlight the connection between sleep and cardiovascular health, and as sleep quality trends decline globally, the importance of early detection and ongoing monitoring will only grow.

In this context, sleep health is becoming a critical pillar of preventative healthcare — and one that is likely to shape both medical research and consumer health technology in the years ahead.

At SXSW 2026, the Emerging Tech Expo showcased how innovation is increasingly focused on practical applications of technology, blending AI, hardware, and user experience into real-world products.

By Laura Kobylecky

SXSW 2026

Some big changes happened for SXSW in 2026. In 2025 it was nine days of events spanning two weekends, but the 2026 edition was reduced to seven days, running from Thursday to Wednesday with a weekend in the middle.

In previous years, the “Interactive” section focused on technology and took place before the Music section, while Film programming overlapped both. SXSW also allowed “secondary badge access,” meaning attendees could sometimes attend events outside their primary badge category if space was available.

This year the “Innovation” section focused on technology, and all three sections occurred concurrently. SXSW also removed secondary access, meaning only Platinum badge holders could cross conference sections.

The old Austin Convention Center has now been demolished, but the conference remains in the same general area, surrounding the flattened space. Hotels have become the main venues. The Fairmont, located between the former convention center site and the I-35 highway, became a central hub of the conference and hosted many of the larger events.

Emerging Tech Expo

One of the larger events at SXSW 2026 was the SXSW Emerging Tech Expo, held in the Manchester Ballroom on the 5th floor of the Fairmont Hotel.

The semi-futuristic but classical construction of the ballroom created a different atmosphere compared to the former convention center. Lighting was dimmer, with chandelier-style fixtures contrasting with the stark brightness of traditional expo halls. Overall, the room felt like a scaled-down version of previous years.

The event was open to the public on Wednesday, March 18th, so the relatively cozy space was occupied by badge holders as well as curious members of the public.

Many booths focused on AI-powered software solutions, ranging from generative facial technology for dubbing to AI-powered gun detection systems. Several SaaS companies also offered tote bags — a conference staple.

A Selection of Booths

Aina Tech

Aina demonstrated holographic and volumetric video technology at the SXSW Emerging Tech Expo

Aina is a company that claims to capture and deliver true holographic video that mirrors the real world. CEO Chaitanya Atluru explained that the company operates primarily as a software company, though it maintains a studio in Los Angeles as a research lab.

Clients record footage using multiple cameras, and Aina’s software builds volumetric video environments that can be explored in virtual space. The videos can be viewed on laptops, headsets, and other devices.

The key advantage is that once footage is captured, users can virtually direct the scene afterward by creating different camera angles, zooming, and moving through the space, effectively offering visual mobility within a recorded environment.

ChargerGoGo

ChargerGoGo charging station allows users to rent portable phone chargers in high-traffic locations

I spoke with Shawn Wen, co-founder at ChargerGoGo, to learn more about their small charging stations. He described them as “like a vending machine for a charger,” where users pay a small fee — typically $3 to $5 per hour — to charge their phones while they continue their activities.

These chargers are designed for locations with high foot traffic, including restaurants, bars, shopping centers, hospitals, stadiums, and universities.

While the concept is common across East Asia, including China, Japan, and South Korea, the challenge in the U.S. market has been localization, including compliance with regulations and integrating local payment systems such as Stripe.

Wen explained that his background in graphic design helped him understand user behavior and product design, emphasizing empathy and intuitive product features.

Namirsa Wellness

Namirsa Wellness displayed muscle recovery and performance devices at SXSW

Namirsa Wellness showcased massage chairs and muscle recovery devices focused on active recovery and performance. Their products include electronic stimulators, percussion devices, and foam rollers designed for muscle recovery and relief. Expo attendees could test the chairs directly at the booth, making it one of the more interactive displays.

DNA Hairtools

DNA Hairtools demonstrated styling tools with live demonstrations at SXSW

DNA Hairtools hosted live demonstrations with freelance stylists showcasing their styling tools. One of their highlighted products was the Air Styler, which uses extra-long titanium plates and infrared technology. The product demonstration showed how the tool could create loose curls that lasted throughout a long and windy day.

Free Professional Headshots – Precision Camera & Fujifilm

Precision Camera and Fujifilm offered free professional headshots at SXSW

Another high-interaction booth offered free professional headshots presented by Precision Camera & Video in partnership with Fujifilm. The booth included a full camera and lighting setup, providing high-quality professional photos with expert guidance. The service proved popular among attendees looking to update their LinkedIn profiles.

TooFar Media

Too far media creates “Immersive Storyworlds.” This combines Animation, Art, Books, Film and music.

MOD Bikes

MOD Bikes showcased electric bikes including a popular sidecar model at SXSW

MOD Bikes, an Austin-based company founded in 2017, displayed its electric bikes at the expo. According to the company’s marketing manager, their sidecar attachment is their best-selling product and ships globally, including to Europe, Korea, Australia, and Japan. The bike on display featured a stuffed dog in the sidecar, which attracted significant attention from attendees.

Conclusion

The SXSW Emerging Tech Expo offered a snapshot of where innovation is currently heading: practical applications of AI, hardware products designed for everyday use, and technology focused on improving real-world experiences rather than purely theoretical innovation.

From holographic video and charging infrastructure to recovery technology and electric mobility, the expo demonstrated that many emerging tech companies are focused on solving practical problems while improving user experience and accessibility.

UK tech founder argues neurodiverse workers may hold a critical advantage as artificial intelligence reshapes the workplace

As businesses race to adopt AI, traditional hiring models are being challenged—opening the door to a more diverse and potentially more effective workforce.

A Different Kind of Competitive Advantage

As artificial intelligence continues to transform how businesses operate, a new conversation is emerging around talent—and who is best equipped to thrive in this rapidly changing environment.

According to Josh Hough, founder of home care software company CareLineLive, neurodiverse individuals may be particularly well suited to this shift.

Speaking during Neurodiversity Celebration Week, Hough highlighted that traits often associated with neurodiversity—such as pattern recognition, deep focus, and problem-solving—are becoming increasingly valuable in AI-driven workflows.

Josh Hough, founder of CareLineLive, advocates for the value of neurodiverse talent in the AI economy

Challenging Traditional Hiring Models

Hough argues that many organisations are still relying on outdated hiring frameworks.

“A lot of businesses still want people who tick every box. The reality is, people who think differently often solve problems differently.”

In an AI economy defined by constant change, adaptability and alternative thinking are becoming critical.

This marks a shift away from:

Process-driven roles

Standardised thinking

Linear problem-solving

Toward a workforce that can:

Interpret complex systems

Identify patterns quickly

Approach problems from new angles

Lived Experience Shapes Innovation

Hough’s perspective is shaped by his own experience.

Born with a rare muscle-weakening condition, he spent much of his early life in a wheelchair—an experience that required him to constantly adapt and rethink how to navigate everyday challenges.

“When you grow up having to do things differently, you don’t assume the standard way is the best way.”

That mindset, he says, has carried directly into how he builds and leads his company.

Building Technology Around Real-World Needs

Founded in 2014, CareLineLive develops software used by more than 700 home care providers globally, supporting over 25,000 carers.

The company focuses on improving how information flows across care systems—an area where inefficiencies can have real-world consequences.

“Too often, information doesn’t move between people in the way it should. That creates risk and wastes time.”

By prioritising clarity, communication, and accessibility, the platform reflects the same principles Hough advocates in workforce design.

Neurodiversity in an AI-Driven Workplace

As AI adoption accelerates, the nature of work is evolving.

Rather than replacing human capability, many AI systems:

Require interpretation

Depend on pattern recognition

Benefit from non-linear thinking

These are areas where neurodiverse individuals may excel.

Hough believes businesses need to rethink how they define capability:

“Not everyone is going to fit a traditional mould—but that doesn’t mean they can’t be excellent at what they do.”

A Broader Shift in Workplace Thinking

The conversation around neurodiversity is moving beyond inclusion—and toward performance.

Forward-looking organisations are beginning to recognise that:

Cognitive diversity can drive innovation

Different thinking styles can improve outcomes

Inclusion is not just ethical—it’s strategic

In the context of AI, this shift may become even more pronounced.

Conclusion

As the AI economy continues to evolve, so too must the way organisations think about talent.

Josh Hough’s perspective highlights a simple but powerful idea:

The future of work may belong to those who think differently.

And for businesses willing to adapt, that represents not a challenge—but a competitive advantage.

PUBG MOBILE partners with Apollo Automobil to bring ultra-rare hypercars into the battlegrounds as part of its 8th anniversary celebrations

Luxury automotive design meets mobile gaming as one of the world’s most popular battle royale titles introduces high-performance hypercars into its in-game experience.

A New Kind of In-Game Collaboration

PUBG MOBILE is expanding its approach to in-game experiences through a new partnership with German hypercar manufacturer Apollo Automobil.

As part of the collaboration, players can access two of the brand’s most distinctive vehicles—the Apollo Intensa Emozione and the Apollo Project EVO—bringing real-world automotive design into the virtual battleground.

The collaboration runs from March 20 to May 10, 2026, and forms part of the game’s broader 8th anniversary celebrations.

Hypercars, Reimagined for the Battleground

The integration goes beyond simple cosmetic additions.

Players can:

Drive two Apollo hypercar models in-game

Choose from multiple exclusive colourways

Unlock visual effects tied to full collections

Equip themed accessories including parachutes and ornaments

The Apollo Intensa Emozione—limited to just ten real-world units—is presented with multiple stylized finishes, translating its sculptural design into a digital format.

Meanwhile, the Apollo Project EVO reflects a more futuristic interpretation of performance engineering, adapted for the game’s fast-paced environment.

Gaming Meets Luxury Branding

This partnership highlights a growing trend:

The convergence of gaming and premium brand ecosystems

Rather than traditional advertising, brands are increasingly embedding themselves directly into gameplay.

For Apollo Automobil, this offers:

Exposure to a global gaming audience

A new form of experiential branding

A way to translate physical product identity into digital environments

For PUBG MOBILE, it enhances player engagement through high-value, collectible content.

The Rise of Experiential Monetisation

Collaborations like this are also part of a wider shift in how games generate revenue and retain users.

Instead of static purchases, players are offered:

Limited-time content

Customisation-driven engagement

Status-driven collectibles

This creates a more dynamic in-game economy—one that blends entertainment with digital ownership and identity.

A Milestone Moment for PUBG MOBILE

The collaboration arrives during PUBG MOBILE’s 8th anniversary, a milestone that reflects its continued global success.

Since its launch, the game has:

Reached hundreds of millions of players worldwide

Evolved into a platform for partnerships and live experiences

Expanded beyond core gameplay into a broader entertainment ecosystem

Anniversary events like this serve not just as celebrations—but as strategic moments to introduce new forms of engagement.

The Bigger Picture

This partnership underscores a broader evolution in gaming:

Games are becoming platforms for brand interaction

Digital environments are acting as showrooms for real-world products

Player identity is increasingly shaped through customisation and exclusivity

As the boundaries between physical and digital experiences continue to blur, collaborations like this are likely to become more common—and more sophisticated.

Conclusion

By bringing hypercar design into its virtual world, PUBG MOBILE is reinforcing its position as more than just a game.

It’s a platform where:

Brands connect with new audiences

Players express identity through premium content

Digital and physical experiences converge

And as these collaborations evolve, they are redefining what engagement looks like in modern gaming.

Autonomous drones are moving from experimental trials into real-world emergency healthcare systems—reducing response times when every second matters.

From Pilot to Commercial Deployment

Swedish drone technology company Everdrone has raised SEK 36 million in a new funding round, signaling its transition into a commercial phase for emergency healthcare services.

The investment, led by Sciety, will support further development of Everdrone’s platform and enable expansion into additional European markets.

CEO Mats Sällström says the funding strengthens the company’s ability to scale:

“This funding gives us stronger conditions to continue building the company and expanding our services into more markets across Europe.”

Drones in the Emergency Chain

Everdrone is already operating what is believed to be the world’s first drone service integrated into an emergency response chain for cardiac arrest.

Its autonomous drones are dispatched in parallel with ambulances, delivering critical equipment—such as defibrillators—directly to the scene.

This approach addresses one of the most critical challenges in emergency care:

Response time

By delivering life-saving equipment before paramedics arrive, the system has the potential to significantly improve survival outcomes.

Everdrone CEO Mats Sällström with one of the company’s autonomous medical drones

A Proven Model Gaining Traction

Unlike many emerging technologies, Everdrone’s system is not theoretical—it is already operational.

Active service in Västra Götaland Region (Sweden)

Procured by Region Stockholm

Expanded into Normandy (France)

The company has also been conducting operational flights since 2020, working closely with healthcare providers to validate its model.

Why Demand Is Growing

Healthcare systems are increasingly exploring new ways to:

Reduce response times

Improve coverage in rural and urban areas

Optimize resource allocation

Drone-based delivery offers a compelling solution—particularly in time-critical scenarios such as cardiac arrest.

As Sällström notes:

“Interest in drone-based solutions in emergency healthcare is increasing as regions look for new ways to reduce response times.”

Beyond Defibrillators

While current deployments focus on delivering automated external defibrillators (AEDs), Everdrone is building a broader platform for emergency logistics.

Potential future use cases include:

Delivery of additional medical supplies

Real-time video support for dispatch teams

Integration with wider emergency services

This positions the company not just as a drone operator—but as a critical infrastructure provider in digital healthcare systems.

Investment Signals Confidence

The funding round was led by Sciety, a Nordic investment firm focused on life sciences and digital health.

Andreas Lindblom, Managing Partner at Sciety, highlights the strategic fit:

“Everdrone addresses a clear and well-documented need in emergency healthcare and has already established partnerships with several regions.”

Beyond capital, the partnership brings:

Industry expertise

Strategic networks

Increased visibility

—key factors for scaling across regulated healthcare markets.

A Broader Shift in Healthcare Innovation

Everdrone’s growth reflects a wider trend:

The convergence of autonomous systems and healthcare delivery

As technology matures, solutions that were once experimental are becoming embedded into real-world infrastructure.

This includes:

AI-assisted diagnostics

Remote monitoring

Autonomous logistics (like drone delivery)

Together, these innovations are reshaping how healthcare systems operate under pressure.

Conclusion

Everdrone’s move into commercial deployment marks a significant milestone—not just for the company, but for the future of emergency response.

By integrating autonomous drones into healthcare systems, it is demonstrating how technology can directly impact outcomes in life-or-death situations.

As adoption expands across Europe, drone-based emergency response may soon become a standard part of modern healthcare infrastructure.

AI is dominating the 2026 unicorn pipeline, as record-breaking investment accelerates the creation of billion-dollar startups across sectors

A surge in funding is not only creating more unicorns—it’s reshaping which technologies define the next wave of global innovation.

AI Leads a Record-Breaking Year

Venture capital is on track for a record year in 2026, with artificial intelligence startups already attracting over $220 billion in funding globally by March—nearly matching the total raised across all sectors in 2025.

According to new analysis from BestBrokers, this surge is rapidly transforming the unicorn landscape. So far this year, 47 startups have crossed the $1 billion valuation threshold, officially joining the unicorn club.

AI companies account for the largest share of these new entrants, representing roughly a quarter of all new unicorns—by far the dominant sector.

A New Unicorn Landscape

The data highlights how concentrated this growth has become.

Breakdown of new unicorns by sector:

AI — 25.5% (12 companies)

HealthTech — 12.8% (6 companies)

Cloud & Infrastructure — 8.5% (4 companies)

Semiconductors — 6.4% (3 companies)

Cryptocurrency — 6.4% (3 companies)

Other sectors — 27.7% (13 companies)

This distribution shows that while AI dominates, there is also strong investor appetite for the infrastructure and adjacent technologies required to support it.

AI leads the share of new unicorns formed in 2026, followed by HealthTech and Cloud Infrastructure

The Most Valuable New Entrants

Among the newly minted unicorns, AI companies are not just the most numerous—they are also the most valuable.

Leading the group is California-based humans&, which reached a valuation of $4.5 billion, backed by major investors including NVIDIA, GV, Emerson Collective, and SV Angel.

Other standout companies include:

Ricursive Intelligence (AI) — $4.0B

This reinforces a broader trend: AI is commanding both volume and valuation leadership.

AI startups dominate the top valuations among new unicorn companies in 2026

The Geography of Innovation

The geographic concentration of unicorn creation is equally striking.

United States — 36 companies

Others — spread across Bahrain, Israel, Sweden, Australia, Belgium, and Singapore

The dominance of the U.S. reflects its continued strength in venture capital, AI research, and startup ecosystems.

Building the AI Economy

One of the most important insights from the data is that investment is not limited to AI applications alone.

As BestBrokers analyst Alan Goldberg notes:

“The current boom is as much about building the foundations of the AI economy as it is about the models themselves.”

This is reflected in strong funding for:

Cloud infrastructure

Semiconductors

Cybersecurity

Robotics

Together, these sectors form the backbone of scalable AI systems.

What This Means for the Market

The 2026 unicorn wave suggests a structural shift in how capital is being deployed.

Key takeaways:

AI is now the primary driver of new unicorn creation

Investors are backing full-stack ecosystems, not just applications

Infrastructure is emerging as a parallel investment priority

Geographic concentration remains high, particularly in the U.S.

This indicates that the current cycle is not just hype—it is a coordinated build-out of long-term technological capacity.

Conclusion

The latest unicorn data paints a clear picture: AI is not just leading the market—it is redefining it.

With record levels of funding and a growing ecosystem of supporting technologies, the next generation of billion-dollar companies is being built around AI at every layer.

The question now is not whether AI will dominate the next wave of innovation—but how broadly that dominance will extend across industries.

Huawei and Yowpay introduce a wearable-first payment solution that could redefine how merchants accept instant, low-cost transactions.

A smartwatch becomes a payment terminal, signaling a shift toward frictionless, card-free commerce powered by open banking.

Turning Wearables Into Payment Terminals

In a move that pushes the boundaries of both fintech and wearable technology, Huawei has partnered with Luxembourg-based fintech Yowpay to launch what is being described as the world’s first Open Banking smartwatch POS application.

The solution enables a Huawei smartwatch to function as a fully operational point-of-sale (POS) terminal—no additional hardware required.

By leveraging SEPA instant payments and account-to-account (A2A) infrastructure, merchants can now accept payments directly from their wrist. Instead of relying on card networks or physical terminals, the system generates a dynamic QR code on the watch face, which customers scan using their smartphones.

How the Technology Works

Huawei smartwatch displaying a dynamic QR code for SEPA-based payments via Yowpay

At the core of the solution is Yowpay’s orchestration layer, which connects merchants directly to bank-based payment rails.

Here’s how a typical transaction works:

The merchant opens the Yowpay app on a Huawei smartwatch

A dynamic QR code is generated on the watch face

The customer scans the code using their smartphone

Payment is initiated via SEPA instant transfer

Funds are received in real time into the merchant’s account

This approach removes intermediaries, bypassing traditional card schemes and their associated fees.

For small businesses, freelancers, and mobile vendors, this could represent a significant shift in both cost structure and operational flexibility.

Why This Matters for Merchants

The implications extend beyond novelty. This is a clear signal of where payments infrastructure is heading.

Key advantages include:

Lower transaction costs
By bypassing card networks, merchants avoid interchange and processing fees

True mobility
No need for card readers, terminals, or smartphones—just a smartwatch

Instant settlement
Payments arrive in real time via SEPA instant transfers

Simplified setup
Ideal for micro-merchants, freelancers, and on-the-go businesses

Financial sovereignty
Direct bank-to-bank transactions reduce dependency on intermediaries

In effect, the smartwatch becomes both a payment acceptance device and a gateway to open banking.

The Rise of QR and A2A Payments

This launch aligns with a broader shift toward QR-based and account-to-account payments globally.

While card payments still dominate in many Western markets, open banking frameworks—particularly in Europe—are accelerating alternatives that prioritize:

Speed

Cost efficiency

Transparency

Control over payment flows

Yowpay’s platform is designed to optimize payment routing across multiple channels, including QR codes and open banking flows, improving conversion rates while maintaining simplicity.

Where Huawei Fits In

Huawei’s role in this partnership highlights a strategic push to expand the capabilities of its wearable ecosystem beyond health and lifestyle tracking.

By integrating fintech functionality directly into devices like the Huawei Watch GT and Watch Ultimate series, the company is positioning wearables as tools for productivity and commerce—not just personal use.

This also reflects a broader industry trend: the convergence of consumer devices and financial infrastructure.

What Comes Next

While still early, smartwatch-based POS systems could open up entirely new use cases:

Street vendors and pop-up retailers

Event-based commerce

Service professionals operating on-site

Emerging markets with limited POS infrastructure

The success of this model will depend on adoption, regulatory alignment, and user trust—but the direction is clear.

Payments are becoming more embedded, more immediate, and increasingly invisible.

Conclusion

The Huawei–Yowpay collaboration marks a notable step toward wearable-first commerce.

By combining open banking with everyday devices, it removes friction from transactions and challenges the dominance of traditional payment systems.

If adoption scales, the future of payments may not sit in your pocket—or even your phone—but on your wrist.
