The Royal British Legion continues to embrace VR technology to bring history to life.

As we enter Remembrance weekend, it is interesting to see how one of Britain’s most beloved charities is using immersive technologies to share the experiences of soldiers who fought in the Great Wars to the next generations, and to help their memories live on.

Tech Trends previously reported on the story of how VR reunited a World War II veteran with the village he helped save, but the Royal British Legion has continued to explore the possibilities of this tech since.

The Legion recently launched Virtual Reality content to mark the 100^th anniversary of the WW1 Battle of Passchendaele – also known as the Third Battle of Ypres.

Created in partnership with historian Dan Snow, the 360 videos invite viewers to travel back to 1917 and live life on the frontline through first-hand audio accounts, diary excerpts, archive film and photos.

“The Battle of Passchendaele was a hugely significant battle which has become infamous for the number of casualties and the sheer scale of the mud, which was even worse than the Somme,” says Snow.

Fought between July and November 1917, Passchendaele remains one of the most notorious battles of the First World War. In three-and-a-half months of fighting, an advance of less than five miles saw an estimated 550,000 Allied and German troops killed, wounded or lost.

Around 90,000 British and Commonwealth soldiers were missing; 50,000 buried without being identified, and 42,000 never recovered from the Belgian fields of Flanders that turned into an ocean of mud.

“Along with our welfare and support work, remembrance is at the heart of what the charity does,” explains Bob Gamble, Head of Engagement at The Royal British Legion. “The Royal British Legion is the national custodian of Remembrance, safeguarding the memory of those who fought and died in conflict.

From life on the front line to nurses battling to treat the flood of casualties, users can experience the realities of the battle through unique and immersive 360/ VR videos, going back to 1917 to see first-hand what life was like on the frontline and at home.

The unique immersive properties of VR – such as the ability of the medium to engender empathy, are particularly suited for this type high-impact content, as it is often difficult for people to grasp the enormity of the experience. This is why we’ve increasingly seen Hollywood experimenting with VR as a storytelling mechanism in that context too, such as the companion VR Dunkirk experience we previewed earlier this year.

Frank is 91, and a Chelsea Pensioner (the iconic charity that provides over 300 veterans with a home and care in recognition of their outstanding service). He was born in Putney and was a corporal in the 263 Field Company of the British Royal Engineers. He participated on the D-Day assault on Sword Beach and in the following weeks joined the action of allied forces that took Pegasus Bridge and liberated several northern French towns from Nazi occupation.

One of those liberated towns – which Frank remembers most fondly – is Armentières. And this week the town used Virtual Reality technology to show how they remembered him too.

In this moving video we see him wearing a Samsung Gear VR headset as he’s given a virtual tour of the town as it looks today. At a local school, he listens to a group of children singing a song in his honour, before going to the Town Hall, where the current mayor presents him with a special medal in recognition of his role in securing the town’s liberation all those years ago.

As the headset is removed, it is clear that the gentleman is clearly moved and delighted by the experience, talking about how it felt “like they were right there.” At that point he is presented with the actual medal that was shown in the video, which he says he will treasure as a family heirloom.

This amazing project was a result of a collaborative effort brokered by creative platform Twine and realized by VR Production company Mutiny Media. It goes to show that the impact of VR goes well beyond gamers and early adopters, bringing such experiences to those less able to physically travel, for example.
