<p>Over the past five years, the number of children who are looked after by Local Authorities (LAs) and children who require child protection plans to be kept safe from &#8216;significant harm&#8217; has increased dramatically in England. And while demand for foster carers and adopters has also increased, the number of approved adoptive families has been on a steady decline.</p>
<p>To help tackle these difficult and complex issues, London-based social enterprise The Cornerstone Partnership has partnered with Immerse UK to test the use of VR as an intervention tool across adoption and fostering services.</p>

<p>Launched in October 2017, their Virtual Reality Programme (CVR) was implemented to improve the life chances of children in care and those who have experienced attachment-related trauma. CVR uses virtual reality technology to change how professionals (including social workers, child and adolescent mental health workers, teachers, and judges), adopters and fosters carers understand and interact with vulnerable children.</p>
<p>Cornerstone VR is using immersive technology within social care to accelerate understanding of trauma and neglect and drive behaviour change in those who have contact with Children in and on The Edge of Care. It works with local authorities across the UK using a VR Library which includes 12 episodes of high impact immersive content designed for use within adoption, fostering and wider children’s services.</p>

<p>The outcomes for children who are in or have been in care are significantly worse than their peers across all key areas; education, health, career, rough-sleeping and mental health. The reasons for that are complex but it is fundamentally about how we as adults and professionals get children on to the right path, quickly and with support, empathy and true understanding. By helping carers better understand these children, we can help prevent huge costs – both financial and emotional – associated with issues such as care breakdowns, education, crime, and mental health issues.</p>

<p>Preliminary results from the 12-month pilot paint a very promising picture of Cornerstone VR’s potential to improve decision making and understanding of trauma, children’s emotions and potential triggers that can help practitioners and policy makers implement more effective solutions.</p>
<blockquote><p>“We’ve spent 18-months developing and perfecting the application of VR in order to shift understanding and alter engrained behaviours across a raft of settings in children’s social care,” explains Helen Costa, Cornerstone CEO. “The fact that our VR tool has shown impact in such a short space of time is beyond all our hopes and expectations. Crucially it illustrates the power of immersive technology in solving complex social issues.”</p></blockquote>

<blockquote><p>“The VR which has been developed and applied by Cornerstone shows how foster carers, adoptive carers and parents can understand the impact of major family issues like neglect and domestic abuse much quicker and in a much deeper way through being immersed in a VR experience, than is possible through conventional learning programmes,” says Anthony Douglas, Chair of Cornerstone’s Advisory Board”</p></blockquote>
<p>Research indicates that VR content receives 27% higher emotional reaction that 2D content and engagement is 34% longer. <a href="http://www.almaeconomics.com/">Alma Economics</a> worked with the Cornerstone Partnership to evaluate the impacts and value for money implications of using virtual reality technology in these settings, and some impressive statistics emerged.</p>

<p>A majority of social workers felt CVR helped improve their own understanding of trauma and stated that they will be doing things differently as a result of the training. 40% of participants said that it helped them gain insights and develop skills that would lead to better decisions. Close to half of all participants believed CVR can help prevent adoption breakdown, while over 90% expected CVR to have a positive impact on their case study. Nine out of ten participants said CVR will lead to changes to the type of support they offer to children and their carers. Over 90% of participants felt that CVR &#8211; by providing a window into trauma and children’s emotions &#8211; can play a key role in attracting the right type of adopters and foster carers.</p>
<blockquote><p>“I strongly believe that VR can have a positive impact on many of the social issues we face in Britain today, like excessive alcohol consumption, obesity, gambling addiction and crimes against the person. If courageous investments are made, the long-term savings both in expenditure and human misery will in my view be high,” says Douglas.</p></blockquote>
<p>The hope is that this immersive therapeutic support can help change behaviour by generating ‘emotional understanding’ and empathy resulting in a positive impact on the relationship dynamic between the adult and the child. With a more resilient adult child relationship, families can be kept together, and placement breakdowns can be avoided.</p>
<blockquote><p>“Using technology as a behaviour change tool has enormous potential for some of our biggest societal challenges – whether that be tackling knife crime, obesity, or climate change. The common theme running through all of this is altering behaviour and I am delighted that we have found a way to harness the technlology and show real results with real impact,” Costa concludes.</p></blockquote>

<p><strong>Virtual Reality Technology doesn’t have to be disruptive, and teachers are already using it to bring lessons to life</strong></p>
<p><em>You’re on your way to Mars &#8211; </em>says my Virtual Reality lesson prompt. This particular VR journey starts with a look around a spacecraft hangar and eventually takes me to the surface of the red planet itself. But I’m actually sitting in the San Francisco offices of <a href="https://www.nearpod.com/nearpod-vr" data-saferedirecturl="https://www.google.com/url?hl=en&amp;q=https://www.nearpod.com/nearpod-vr&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1465391902574000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHv3g-hh-aJijd5JVcHNfxQYUPG5Q">Nearpod</a>, an EdTech company that has already introduced millions of K12 students to this type of experience.</p>

<blockquote><p>Over 3 million kids log into our platform every month, and about 60% of those have accessed VR content, Guido Kovalskys, Co-founder and CEO of Nearpod tells me.</p></blockquote>
<p>Which is impressive, especially considering they only launched the VR feature just over six months ago.</p>
<blockquote><p>The Virtual Reality experience doesn’t actually replace a teacher’s traditional lesson plan; it adds visual elements to it at the right moments to increase engagement and drive up comprehension and learning,” he explains. “Research shows that student engagement drives better learning outcomes, but it has to be meaningful engagement, relevant to what you’re learning at that moment. The lessons take longer to put together than the actual VR content, because there’s a lot of pedagogy and planning involved.</p></blockquote>

<p>Those lessons transport students to locations ranging from the Egyptian pyramids to Easter Island caves and the marine biomes of the Great Barrier Reef. In a way, it’s similar to <a href="https://www.google.co.uk/edu/expeditions/" data-saferedirecturl="https://www.google.com/url?hl=en&amp;q=https://www.google.co.uk/edu/expeditions/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1465391902574000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHhBkmnKf3kf0yTXcQhmJuKR8Q4ww">Google Expeditions</a>, but with a much stronger emphasis on lesson plan structure surrounding the content.</p>
<p>An example of how that works in practice: One French teacher recently used the VR feature to create a scavenger hunt when he took his class to a field-trip at a local museum. Students looked for Impressionist works on loan from Paris museums, and whenever they found one, they could look through their VR goggles see that same painting in its original setting in France. The Nearpod platform then let the teacher assign related homework where students wrote in French about their favourite discoveries.</p>
<blockquote><p>What we do is essentially help teachers quickly create learning experiences for their students in class, using their own devices or the school-supplied gear. Being cross-platform eliminates the need for special hardware, so a teacher can control a lesson directly from their iPhone, and integrate into apps such as Google for Education if they want. Says Kovalsky.</p></blockquote>

<blockquote><p>Every single day 55 million kids in the US go to school, and the core of what they do is spend time with teachers in the classroom, that’s not changing any time soon. So we looked at ways of enhancing that experience. In a classroom where you have one instructor and lots of students, how do you make learning as personal as possible without losing the social aspect? We started by creating a type of interactive PowerPoint that let teachers share content not to the projector, but to student’s individual devices. That way, a teacher can control their lesson from their smartphone, and students can interact with that content live in their hands, responding, adding their own notes, etc.</p></blockquote>
<p>To bring immersive VR into that equation, they studied what the minimum viable experience was that could be produced at a relatively low cost:</p>
<blockquote><p>Our challenge was how to bring the best aspects of VR to the classroom without having to invest $600 per student plus $1000 for a computer that has to be attached to the device. That’s not going to be realistic for most schools, so we looked at what was already being used today – smartphones, Chromebooks, and tablets, and worked on making those more immersive using tools like 360 video.</p></blockquote>
<p>Nearpod are targeting a market worth at least <a href="https://www.siia.net/Press/SIIA-Estimates-838-Billion-Dollars-US-Market-for-PreK-12-Educational-Software-and-Digital-Content" data-saferedirecturl="https://www.google.com/url?hl=en&amp;q=https://www.siia.net/Press/SIIA-Estimates-838-Billion-Dollars-US-Market-for-PreK-12-Educational-Software-and-Digital-Content&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1465391902574000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFlI-yoooFW_56IALUlsSPt0-RMZQ">12 billion dollars</a> by the latest estimates. They operate on a freemium model that combines selling licences to schools and charging a few dollars for individual lesson plans, but a lot of the content is freely available.</p>

<p>The pedigree of investors betting in that vision is more impressive than the actual amount it raised &#8211; $9.2 million so far. These include the Emerson Collective (founded by Steve Jobs’ widow Laurene Powell Jobs), Salesforce CEO  Marc Benioff, and Zynga, which also hosts Nearpod in its impressive San Francisco building. One of those investors, Ben Wirz from the Knight foundation, says that what makes the company&#8217;s proposition so exciting is how it brings best practices from consumer mobile media into the classroom. Now they’re applying the same bottom-up strategy to VR.</p>

<p>Although Kovalskys agrees that VR is about to hit the mass market in areas such as gaming, he sees K12 education taking another 5-7 years to implement it meaningfully across the board.</p>
<blockquote><p>Schools are naturally very conservative, and the system makes it difficult to scale up until the research behind it is proven. We get concerns such as ‘will this make our kids dizzy,’ does it amount to just more screen time,’ and ‘is it just Silicon Valley pushing this?’ We’re still trying to prove to some people that mobile devices can be more than a distraction in the classroom, so it’s a long-term project.</p></blockquote>
<p>He has no fears about the technology catching up with demand, however, as he’s already seeing a dramatic rise in accessibility in the year since they started offering VR lessons: “Six months ago you needed about an hour of editing to stitch together every minute of 360 video you shot, but that’s no longer the case now. The hardware has also become a lot more affordable. We started out with Cardboard but now have our own gear, which is similar to what Samsung offers and provides a fantastic user experience.”</p>

<p>Kovalskys sees those experiences as the ultimate antidote to lesson boredom:</p>

<p>&#8220;It all started with a Hackathon,&#8221; Jennifer Holland, Google Apps for Education Program Manager tells me. In typical tech fashion, a bunch of Googlers thought it would be great to combine the Virtual Reality technology being rolled out with <a href="https://vr.google.com/cardboard/index.html">Google Cardboard</a> with their education offering already embraced by teachers from all over the world. Throw in Google Maps/Earth/Streetview into the mix, and the idea for <a href="https://www.google.com/edu/expeditions/">Google Expeditions</a> was born.</p>

<p>They started testing out these virtual field trips in classrooms a year ago, and since then have worked with content partners to create more than 200 immersive experiences that take students to places like Versailles, Machu Pichu, Buckingham Palace and the Burj Khalifa building in Dubai.</p>

<p>Since then VR has taken off in a big way, and many companies realized the great potential of the technology to engage students in the classroom. I recently talked to San Francisco-based start-up <a href="https://edtechdigest.wordpress.com/2016/05/19/new-frontiers/">Nearpod</a> about how their VR lesson plans have been a huge hit with both teachers and students in the 6 months since they started incorporating the technology into their platform:</p>

<p>Google also took their users underwater when it worked with Sir David Attenborough and Alchemy VR to create a virtual expedition to the Great Barrier Reef:</p>
<blockquote><p>“Through virtual reality, I’m lucky enough to be able to share my experiences with audiences of all ages to allow them to explore and learn about these diverse ecosystems in a more immersive way,” said Sir David, who has always been a pioneer in using technology to educate the public about the wonders of the natural world.</p></blockquote>

<p>Cody Karutz from Stanford’s Virtual Human Interaction Lab also agrees that virtual reality has definite advantages in creating empathy for the environment and thus aiding conservation. His own coral-related project <em><a href="http://www.newsweek.com/vr-tries-make-you-care-about-coral-reefs-459378">Crystal Reef</a> </em>was showcased in this year’s Tribeca Film Festival, and the <a href="https://vhil.stanford.edu/">VHIL</a> created a version of it for Expeditions that Google has been using for many months now, says the lab&#8217;s Director Jeremy Bailenson.</p>
<p>Google says they’re “thrilled by the potential” of VR technology, and announced new partnerships with the Associated Press and Getty Images to incorporate current affairs content into the platform and give teachers more options to work Virtual Reality into lesson plans.</p>

<p>With companies like Facebook investing heavily VR, Google is also making larger moves towards staking its claim in that space. At their annual developer conference this week they also unveiled Daydream, their new mobile Virtual Reality platform to enable high quality VR on Android smartphones. Also significant is the announcement that they will be building an intuitive controller that works in tandem with the headset to produce richer and more immersive experiences.</p>
