Share your world with friends through the Display.land App then build an engaging AR experience and play together from anywhere on the planet with the new Studio creation tool

The goal of hot startup Ubiquity6 is to improve interpersonal communication by enabling friends and family to easily share augmented spaces where they can meet, chat, play and have fun creating AR games and experiences claims CEO and co-founder of Ubiquity6 Anjney Midha. Last month they launched their first public Beta of their Display.land app for iOS and Android smartphones. Unlike most AR apps to date Display.land is not a single user, standalone AR experience but rather a portal or browser through which users can connect, share their world and play in AR.

“Multiplayer, cross-platform 3D, AR and VR experiences are among the most successful types of media on the planet today, from Fortnite and Roblox to Pokemon Go and Snapchat Lenses.” explained Anjney Midha, CEO and co-founder of Ubiquity6.

This concept has attracted a lot of interest and to date, Ubiquity6 has raised over $37.5 million in funding from investors including Index Ventures, First Round Capital, Google’s Gradient Ventures and KPCB. All this capital and more than two years of development mean that under the hood Display.land is doing some very clever and interesting things, check out some examples of 3D scans created by the app in the video below.

The Display.land app claims to be “the world’s fastest way to create, edit and share real-world 3D environments and assets using everyday mobile cameras,” so what does this mean exactly? Well, basically you can use the app and your phone camera to scan your real environment, be it your living room, office or favorite cafe then the app sends the data to Ubiquity6’s cloud servers where it is stored and can be shared with your friends via a simple URL.

“By building a way for creators to publish these types of experiences with unprecedented speed and ease, we are offering players a single destination for immersive experiences that brings them back everyday to play with a community of friends they can’t find anywhere else.” said Midha.

You can then use the app to both share the same 3D digital space (created via your phone) and use simple AR creation tools to create persistent, dynamic multiplayer AR experiences and generally have fun playing with each other. With over 92,000 user-created spaces from 142 countries, it’s safe to conclude that this is something people want and enjoy doing so the company have just released the next part of the puzzle.

“The Displayland app is the world’s easiest way for creators to capture and turn real world locations into assets for 3D, AR and VR experiences. The Studio is the world’s easiest way to make multiplayer 3D, AR and VR experiences using those assets that can be played within the Displayland app and any web browser. Together, they form an end-end creation and publishing experience for anyone to blend reality and imagination with the kind of speed, scale and fidelity only currently available to high end gaming, graphics and VFX professionals.” enthused Midha.

Hot on the heels of December’s app release Ubiquity6 has now announced the next step in their journey, Display.land Studio. The Studio is a serious step up from the app, offering a more advanced toolset to help you create and share complex multiplayer 3D, AR, and VR games and experiences.

“Display.land Studio is intended for anyone interested in creating and modding multiplayer 3D, AR and VR games and experiences. It is a cloud editor that offers rich player customization and level layout options that include built-in templates. All in-world textures and assets can be replaced with your own photos, videos and 3D environments and objects captured by your camera.” said Midha.

For developers, Display.land Studio offers flexible APIs to the underlying 3D engine that powers all Display.land experiences
Share on X

The Studio is a visual and code-optional playground for those of us who love to create and bring people together through social play. Experiences created with the studio can be entirely virtual or anchored to any real-world location precisely to a few centimeters.

Logic and gameplay features are easily changeable via lightweight scripting and custom components. Users can also create and publish shared, persistent AR games and experiences using the Studio’s built-in AR Cloud positioning service. It allows anyone to publish cross-platform, multiplayer experiences that can be shared and played instantly on mobile, desktop and head-mounted devices. No prior programming experience is required, but if you know a little bit of web development and javascript, you’re already off to the races.

For developers, Display.land Studio offers flexible APIs to the underlying 3D engine that powers all Display.land experiences, with an engine that ensures you can develop in JavaScript and uses familiar web patterns, libraries, and asset formats, without sacrificing on security or best-in-class performance across all supported platforms: AR, VR, Mobile, and Web.

Where the app gives you the tools to scan a 3D model of your real-life environment and share it the Display.land Studio now gives you the tools to build more advanced, sharable and interactive AR experience and blend them with your 3D location models. The results will also be sharable beyond the app and accessible across platforms including VR, Mobile, and Web.

We’ve also taken care of many of the difficulties in building engaging, cross-platform, real-world experiences. With plug and play multiplayer networking, persistence, cross-platform input handling, integration with our AR Cloud service, and more, our engine has been built to allow you to focus on what makes your experience unique – your creativity.

If the goal behind all this was to create a better, more interactive way for friends and families to keep in touch and communicate more effectively, sharing more of the world around them and playing together then I think you can say Ubiquity6 has succeeded. The app is simple to use for the less tech savy and now the Studio offers more skilled creators a way to build advanced and engaging AR experiences that all users can access. Remember, we are still in the very early stages of immersive tech and are a long way from the day our lives are truly enhanced and augmented but Tech Trends is watching Ubiquity6 with keen interest. If consumer AR is going to really take off enabling people to build their own personalised AR easily and making those experiences sharable across platforms might just prove to be a tipping point.

If you are interested in the tools and features the Display.land Studio offers you can sign up today for early access here.

Get stuck into our bumper Black Friday product reviews!

Oculus Quest

If there is one gadget to pick up this Black Friday it is the awesome Oculus Quest. I know this review of the Quest is very late to the party but we have taken our time and here are our thoughts. When we reviewed the Go back in June 2018 I summed by saying:

The lack of friction for the user feels so good after years of faffing and fiddling and popping phones in and out and trailing headphone cables around that it felt like real progress. The Oculus Go is not breaking any new technical ground but it cuts the cord and shows us the way forward.

This liberation from accessories and cables is still its most compelling feature and makes it truly portable just like the Go. The Quest, however, does break new ground and feels like a serious upgrade. It’s not just one simple thing, it’s a combination of advances in different areas that make this nifty stand-alone HMD our new go-to headset.

The 1,440×1,600-pixel LCD is a small but pleasing update and the Quest uses fixed foveated rendering to go easy on the Snapdragon 835 while the grainy black and white Passthrough camera is a functional, if not glamorous, feature. It does feel like you are walking through a 1990’s video game but it is a useful and practical update from Oculus.

I feel the real game-changer is ‘Oculus Insight’, their take on inside-out tracking. This is the introduction of two Oculus Touch hand controllers that work with the Quest’s new on-board sensors to track and map the movement of the user and the space and objects around them.

The foundation of Oculus Insight’s inside-out tracking is simultaneous localization and mapping, or SLAM, which uses computer vision CV algorithms to essentially fuse incoming data from multiple sensors in order to fix the position of an object within a constantly updated digital map. (Source: Facebook)

You can dive deeper into the creation of this amazing technology here on Facebook’s Tech site but suffice to say that packing an advanced SLAM sytem into the Quest where is had to run off a mobile chip and a small low-power battery was no mean feat, but boy does it work!

Overall, Oculus Insight just makes the whole proposition of playing and working in VR without, or at least with much fewer, perceptual artifacts like swimminess (the disorienting sensation you get when your physical and virtual positions and movements don’t line up) and judder (visual strobing and smearing between frames), a reality. Facebook acknowledge that there is a long way to go but this initial accomplishment is a huge part of what makes the Quest so comfortable to use for longer periods of time and makes it feel, well, just right.

Oculus Insight marks the first time that fully untethered six-degree-of-freedom (6DoF) headset and controller tracking has shipped in a consumer AR/VR device. Built from the ground up, the Insight stack leverages state-of-the-art computer vision (CV) systems and visual-inertial simultaneous localization and mapping, or SLAM.
Like the Go, the Quest features externally mounted speakers, so you can listen in VR and still interact with sounds around you, in addition to two headphone jacks, one on either side of the headset, that let the user seal themselves off completely from the real world. It might have annoyed my colleagues but I stuck to using the speakers so I could keep chatting with them while in VR.

One drawback is that the app platform is not shared with the Go so you can’t get all the same apps, but Cnet has a good list of available games here. The Quest will be around for a while and with talk of the upcoming Oculus Link expanding its capabilities once tethered to a PC I’m sure that Oculus will be adding more ambitious apps and games as time passes and there are plenty there already to keep you busy. Having messed around with demos, video content, games and other VR whatnots I can say that the content is pretty good and will only get better.

Battery life was about 2 hours, sometimes a little more, which I think is fine for a device like this. The speed and fluidity of the VR interface was noticeably faster and smoother than the Go and browsing for content was easy and fun. The HMD felt generally more comfortable than the Go and the included glasses spacer really helped but did allow light to leach in around my nose, nothing that caused an issue, but worth noting.

At the moment the Quest is our recommended go-to HMD for consumer VR media or gaming and I’m betting it will remain our favorite cable-free VR experience for a good while yet. With Link technology and real-time hand tracking on the way in 2020 the Quest promises to become even more compelling.

Animo Activity Tracker & Behavior Monitor for Dogs by Sure Petcare

I have three very active dogs so I was very keen to try the Animo from Sure Petcare. It’s basically supposed to be a Fitbit for dogs! I don’t really care how many calories they have burned but knowing that they get a good 1 hour plus of exercise a day reassures me about their health and, to be honest, mine as I get pretty much the same exercise as they do, following them around and picking up after.

Animo learns and interprets the unique activity and behavior patterns of your dog
Share on X

Animo learns and interprets the unique activity and behavior patterns of your dog. It’s with them 24 hours a day, giving you a greater understanding of their lives. Morning walks, sleeping under the table, barking at the postman; your dog’s days are action packed and now you get to know about it all.

I hooked up the Animos to my dogs’ collars, got the app hooked up via Bluetooth and we all went on with our daily routines. Now this is the main issue I have with tech like this. It is not designed for your daily ‘real-life’ routines and behaviour and I am sorry to say the Animo was a total disappointment. I refuse to adapt my life to the tech that is supposed to help me, other that checking the apps, considering the data they provide and maybe, just maybe changing the way I do something.

Animo uses an adaptive algorithm that learns, interprets and gives you facts that are specific to your dog. This changes throughout your dog’s life, so you can understand more about your pet as they get older.

The way we run our days and the way we exercise our dogs just didn’t fit the Animo way of doing things and as I say, not unreasonably, tech is supposed to work for us not the other way around, this meant that within a matter of days the app was out of synch with the collars and apart from annoying notifications on my phone that the collars had not synched with the app recently I got no valuable data out of the devices.

It is not up to me to synch a $90 device with an app so that it can tell me something! It should just work and synch when in range or whatever. We should not have to ‘help’ expensive technology help us. I was promised data on activity, calories, sleep, behaviour and rest, but the way we live resulted in little or no data of any use or interest.

Animo sends alerts if your dog begins to show significant changes in behavior including barking, scratching and shaking. You can also discover long term changes in your dog’s sleep, where a decrease in quality may be a sign of arthritis or other environmental factor which is disturbing your dog at night.

This was a classic example of a cunning and interesting gadget that promised a lot gave me nothing I needed because it didn’t ‘just work’. Approaching 2020 things need to start ‘just working’ for us, the days of allowances and working with new systems is gone. If it doesn’t work for you, bin it, which is what I did with the Animo. However, if you really want a lot of data on your pets, are a detail-obsessed, tech-savvy and data-hungry person with little or no work or life distractions this might work for you.

You can pick up an Animo here for $89.60 or here for £59.99

SureFeed Microchip Pet Feeder from Sure Petcare

Moving swiftly on to the next Sure Petcare product we are faced with the elaborate and very very niche SureFeed Microchip Pet Feeder Connect. Now there is a clear market for this in the older and tech-savvy pet owners who dote over cats with very specific diet control challenges, are often away from home for days at a time and have the cash to invest in an expensive system like this at £169.98 or $252.79.

The one problem here is that in my experience this kind of older pet obsessed person can often be found shouting and stabbing frustrated fingers at the wrong side of an iPad or failing miserably to send an email from a smartphone rather than mastering a networked, programmable, automated pet feeder after absorbing the 28 pages of instructions the Feeder Connect comes with. Anyway…

It’s the ideal feeding solution for overweight cats, cats with medical conditions that require close monitoring of feeding or multi-pet homes where one pet steals another pet’s food.

Basically the Pet Hub wirelessly connects to the Feeder and is itself hardwired to your router and connects with the app on your phone allowing you to monitor the feeding activity of your cat while controlling functions of the Feeder Connect. The Hub comes in the cute shape of a cat’s head with ears that light up to indicate network activity.

The Microchip Pet Feeder Connect links to the Sure Petcare app via the Hub, which is connected to your home router. Each Hub can connect up to ten devices, including our connected doors.

The camera packs a lot of clever tech into a really small package. It comes safely packed in a small pelican case along with mains power connector and an ethernet cable for firmware updates and live streaming. This basic camera package now sells for $7,995 including 50GB of storage in your VR Studio online account. The camera can also run off a portable battery leaving you free to move around and record 360 footage pretty much anywhere you like. Live streaming in 4K however, requires a hard wired ethernet connection to a router due to the bandwidth requirements. This is not a deal killer but will require some advanced planning and coordination so your event venue has ready the equipment and connection you need.

To sum up, the Live Planet system makes broadcasting your live event to the web in 4K 360 easier and cheaper than ever before. The company is also constantly evolving the product and I have heard that in-camera still photo capture and 6K recording are on the way soon so this is a platform that should stay relevant for a long while. It is a compelling option for venues and artists who want to ride the booming trend of 360 VR video.

Step into the most haunted house in England with this creepy Snapchat filter

Ashley Thorpe first read about the “most haunted house in England” in the Usborne Book of the Unknown: Ghosts. It was the beginning of a life-long fascination with all things supernatural, and led to a career which over the years saw him produce a series of films based on the spooky folklore of the British Isles.

Thorpe’s production company Carrion Films has since made several award-winning short films in that vein such as “The Hairy Hands” and “The Screaming Skull,” and their unique animation style has earned him many fans. Yet the story of Borley Rectory remained, as he put it “his Everest.”

Borley Rectory is an animated documentary chronicling what came to be known as ‘The most haunted house in England’. The legends attached to the rectory and famed paranormal investigator Harry Price’s subsequent investigations of them, caught the public’s imagination during the 1930s, becoming one of the world’s most notorious ghost stories and influencing Shirley Jackson’s ‘The Haunting of Hill House’ and Richard Matheson’s ‘Hell House.’

The feature-length project took several years to complete and was financed through crowdfunding, raising the funds needed to bootstrap the production costs through two Indiegogo campaigns. Thorpe’s vision and unique animation style drew a star cast that mostly agreed to work on the project pro bono, including Reece Shearsmith (The League of Gentlemen, High-Rise, Shaun of the Dead) Richard Strange (Batman, Harry Potter) Nicholas Vince (A.K.A. Chatterer from Hellraiser) and Julian Sands (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Dexter, A Room With a View).

Thorpe recalls many a late evening spent painstakingly animating the feature-length film frame-by-frame after his daughter Lily Wednesday (Named after Wednesday Addams in case you haven’t guessed) had gone to sleep. To call it a passion project is probably an understatement.

Since its long-awaited release in the festival circuit last year, the film has gathered a slew of awards and is now out on Blu-Ray, released by Nucleus Films. The release has also inspired the publication of an updated edition of the Usborne Book of the Unknown: Ghosts, the book that started it all, but they weren’t quite done with yet.

“We knew that the supernatural theme – this blurring of the boundaries between the real and the ethereal, would lend itself to all sorts of immersive experiences, and we eventually settled on doing a sharable AR filter, as we wanted to explore the Snapchat Lens Studio tool, and make a something we could share with our community as a treat for Halloween,”

Explained the film’s Producer Tom Atkinson, who is also Director at creative agency R3Digital, which developed the “Scream For Me” AR filter based on the Rectory’s most infamous resident – a nun rumoured to have been buried alive within the walls of a monastery that had once existed on the site.

“Those who live in Borley village say that a phantom nun has haunted the area for centuries. She often used to wander through the grounds of the rectory and she can still be seen today, gliding along a path called ‘Nun’s walk’. Borley Rectory…This wood, and the whole neighbourhood of the Rectory, is supposed to be haunted by the ghosts of a groom and a nun who attempted to elope one night several hundred years ago but were apparently caught in the act.” (Extract from Usborne Book of the Unknown: Ghosts)

The “Scream For Me” AR filter is triggered when it detects the screaming shape of the person’s mouth, overlaying the nun’s habit and skull face onto their selfie as a loud screaming sound makes itself heard. tip: if you have dogs around, that noise freaks them right out.”

“Having done this filter immediately triggered all these other ideas for us, and I can see why brands are getting so excited about using Augmented Reality,” says Atkinson. “There is something about the way that using such a filter, superimposed on your own face and surroundings connects with you in a really instinctive, I’d say almost visceral way, that’s very interesting and compelling. There’s certainly a great appetite for AR filters, and I myself find them strangely addictive, specially when they’re rather unsettling like the recent Facebook filter that turns you into the Joker from the latest Joaquin Phoenix movie.”

Like every other aspect of the project, Thorpe and his team are mindful of using the best creative mediums to tell what is, at the end of the day, their favourite ghost story ever.

“That feeling you get when you’re really scared and fascinated by a story, that is what I felt when I first read the book, and what I’ve always aimed for in my career to share with other people. It’s about storytelling, and you can use so many different tools to tell a good story such as the Borley Rectory one, which is why I’m excited we now have this whole new toolbox of XR to play with. Borley Rectory is this portal between two worlds, and I love the way that XR also blends these different realities and perceptions into something new. It’s a perfect match between storytelling and medium.”

Next up, Thorpe says Carrion Films is looking for partners and financing to do a more ambitious immersive project based on the film’s most iconic scene, the séance conducted by paranormal investigator Harry Price.

“To create an experience where people would actually be able to feel as if they were stepping into the shoes of Harry Price, interacting with the spirits that haunt Borley, that would be a worthy culmination for our story. I’d like to think that our efforts have managed to raise this story from the ashes, and bring it back to life for a new generation that will grow up to be as fascinated by those ghosts as I was when I first read the Usborne book. But to be able to actually place you at that table through AR, that would be something else entirely, and I think it’s amazing that the technology is out there that allows you to do it.”

Thorpe says he has been inspired by recent XR success such as Chained: A Victorian Nightmare and the immersive production of The War of the Worlds which also ran on a similar Victorian Gothic vein as Borley Rectory. His ambition, however, is to take the experience much further by using volumetric capture, holograms and a range of haptics and biofeedback to literally create an other-worldly experience.

Producer Tom Atkinson says they’re having some interesting discussions with various potential partners to make this happen, and he believes the timing is right for such ambitious projects as audiences get more discerning and develop an appetite that demands high-quality immersive content.

“Most companies out there, whether they’re the tech giants making the hardware or the telecoms companies pushing the case for 5G have come to realize that if they’re ever going to reach the tipping point in consumer take-up of these technologies, we need to provide those users with compelling experiences. It’s an exciting time to be a creator in this space.”
