The Internet democratized knowledge, but immersive technologies like AR and VR will democratize access to experience – and revolutionize learning.

Prestigious medical institutions such as Imperial College London are using HoloLens devices in operating theatres to spot key blood vessels, bones, and muscles helping to make procedures quicker and safer.

Surgeons have traditionally used a handheld ultrasound scanner to find vessels under the skin by detecting the movement of blood. However, this is very time-consuming and still requires some guesswork
Share on X

Patients who have suffered an accident may have open wounds that require reconstructive surgery. Skin and blood vessels are taken from a healthy part of the body and used to cover the wound, enabling it to close and heal properly. A vital step in the process is connecting the blood vessels of the “new” tissue with those at the site of the wound, so oxygenated blood can reach the area.

Surgeons have traditionally used a handheld ultrasound scanner to find vessels under the skin by detecting the movement of blood. However, this is very time-consuming and still requires some guesswork as to where the vessels are and their path through body tissue, explained Dr Dimitri Amiras – a Consultant Musculoskeletal Radiologist at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust – as he walked me through the demo.

The technology allows surgeons to take CT scans that have previously been completed and overlay 3D digital models of them onto a patient’s limb during reconstructive surgery. It has been used to help surgeons successfully move blood vessels from one part of the body to another in order to help open wounds heal more quickly.

At the Global Education and Skills Forum (GESF) in Dubai I got a chance to try it out first-hand, and it was pretty amazing, specially knowing that the Holograms I was looking at were based on real CT scans. Patients so far have included a 41-year-old man who injured his leg in a car crash, an 85-year-old woman who fractured her fibula and a person who developed an infection that required surgery.

“Mixed reality offers a new way to find these blood vessels accurately and quickly by overlaying scan images onto the patient during the operation. This technology allows us to experience the data that we have collected from patients before their operation in the most realistic and natural way. You look at the leg and essentially see inside of it; you see the bones and the course of the blood vessels,” he said.

Dr Philip Pratt, a Research Fellow in the Department of Surgery and Cancer at Imperial, said using the HoloLens is allowing surgeons to understand a patient’s unique anatomy very quickly and accurately and to collaborate more efficiently in teams as multiple surgeons wearing the headsets can also see what their colleagues are specifically looking at.

As well as a powerful visualization and collaboration tool for working surgeons, immersive technologies can also help solve a growing problem: the global shortage of such professionals, specially in the developing world
Share on X

As well as a powerful visualization and collaboration tool for working surgeons, immersive technologies can also help solve a growing problem: the global shortage of such professionals, specially in the developing world. Training facilitated by immersive technologies can be instrumental in addressing the chronic shortage of trained professionals in areas such as teaching, healthcare and the digital economy.

Bassem F Hashash, from Augmented Reality training and collaboration platform Proximie, says an estimated five billion people worldwide do not have access to surgery This is due partly to the chronic lack of specialists available to perform such procedures, and the difficulty and expense involved in training new surgeons.

An estimated five billion people worldwide do not have access to surgery
Share on X

Training at scale is a real challenge, specially in areas such as healthcare, as you can only fit a small number of students in an Operating Room, and observation and practice is how one learns the crucial skillset necessary in such professions. Yet with immersive technology is possible for experts and students to virtually transport themselves into settings which allow them to flexibly collaborate and train. They can, in other words, become a democratizing force in education, by enabling students to virtually access experiences that would otherwise be out of their reach.

Using the HoloLens allows surgeons to understand a patient’s unique anatomy quickly and accurately and to collaborate more efficiently in teams
Share on X

According to Richard Vincent of Fundamental VR who was also showcasing his haptic Virtual Reality application at GESF (which let me have a great time literally messing around someone’s insides) it isn’t a matter of virtual training being “better,” but of enabling the benefits of experiential learning to become more widely accessible, allowing training to move beyond the limited model of “See one, do one, teach one” and opening up the possibilities for students to practice and perfect their skills in a safe and accurate environment.

Training at scale is a real challenge, specially in areas such as healthcare, as you can only fit a small number of students in an Operating Room, and observation and practice is how one learns the crucial skillset
Share on X

People all over the world will be able to easily access realistic experiences and simulations, learning and practicing new skills in entirely new ways
Share on X

In developing his own HoloLens application, Vincent has seen evidence that working with Mixed Reality tends to trigger different parts of the brain through immersion, so that content is assimilated more quickly and “sticks” with learners for longer, hence its potential to add to, enhance and accelerate learning. And Moore’s law, he adds means that his company’s current training simulation system costs one tenth of what it did a few years prior, and he expects that exponential driving down of cost to continue to increase sharply over the next five to ten years.

“As the technology progresses it will become more affordable and more integrated into our everyday lives. Just as most people here are carrying some sort of smartphone, the next step will be some sort of augmented reality device,” says Dr Amiras

“This is the new interface between computers and humans. What happens with technology is that when it works well, it disappears,” agrees Vincent. “Immersive Technology in the future won’t be about a bulky headset. What we have today is the equivalent of the Motorola phone of 1987. It will be glasses and contacts. This might feel scary now but in 10 years time it will feel as natural as carrying a smartphone in your pocket does now.”

All this means that people all over the world will be able to easily access realistic experiences and simulations, learning and practicing new skills in entirely new ways. Much in the same way as the widespread adoption of the Internet facilitated broader access to knowledge, Immersive technologies can enable broader and more egalitarian access to experience itself, and that’s pretty exciting.

I am often impressed by the way Sansar looks
Share on X

I am often impressed by the way the Sansar VR platform looks. Some of it might be buggy, but overall, the slick visuals you see on its user-generated experiences wouldn’t look out of place in a AAA game. In the social VR space, still dominated by blocky avatars and limited landscapes, the sheer variety and polish in Sansar makes it stand out – in a good way.

But this all comes at a price, and anybody familiar with gaming will be know the trade-off between how good something looks and how long it takes for to download, all too well. In order to test out all these textured, beautifully lit, atmospheric experiences, I therefore had to spend what felt like a long time loading them on a very powerful PC.

Which made it both fund and challenging to be one of the judges in Sansar’s Halloween-themed competition, which awarded one lucky winner a 10,000 prize, and which featured a broad range of spooky environments and experiences. It was a chance to see first-hand what the platform has enabled its users to create in VR, even without if they don’t have the benefit of vast amounts of technical knowledge to do so.

The visuals in some Sansar experiences are worthy of AAA game titles
Share on X

Granted, many of the people onboarded onto Sansar’s Creator’s Beta (which went live earlier this year) are actually gifted designers. Yet what Sansar is building towards is a set of tools and functionalities that allows everybody to create and kit out their own virtual worlds however they wish, without having to worry about a steep learning curve – a factor that definitely contributed to stalling growth in Linden Lab’s original Metaverse, Second Life.

“Sansar is about empowering everyone to create, share, and benefit from their own social VR experiences, and we want to make it accessible to as many people as possible,” agrees Bjorn Laurin, Linden Lab’s VP Product.

So, without further ado, here’s the lowdown on ‘Sansar Scariest’ competition winner and additional honourable mentions, which have just been officially announced by Linden Lab:

Winner

The Diner by C3rb3rus

A dark, seemingly abandoned Diner that’s just on the side of the quiet road and an old-fashioned drive-in movie theater set the scene for an unsettling encounter with the unknown. Did you hear that? It sounds like someone calling for help!

Even by Sansar standards, the lighting and textures in this experiences were amazing, incredibly nuanced. From the giant flying saucer spinning away to the MGM lion roaring from the drive-in movie screen in the distance, every element felt well-executed and real. Which is probably why it produced the best – spoiler alert – “jump out of your skin” moment of any of the experiences I tried.

Honorable Mentions

Paranormal Investigation by Abramelin Wolfe

Join the ‘Ghost Catchers’ and take part in a paranormal investigation this Halloween exploring a very haunted house. Many rooms with many ghosts. Some nice, some…..not so nice!

This felt like something I would have paid for if it was a console game. Carefully crafted visuals, well-timed and well-judged sound effects, this is an experience that has something for everybody, including Ghostbusters fans like myself, who will delight in having the library books floating off the shelves all around them. Definitely not the most original in terms of theme and composition, but absolutely beautiful to look at and a pleasure to explore.

Stasis Interrupted – Chapter 1 by Tyler Scarborough

A space ship where something has gone horribly horribly wrong – find your way to the escape pod, or face a most terrible fate! Try not to get lost in all those dark, flickering halls.

Sorry if this counts as a spoiler, but they had me at “It’s like Alien, but with Zombies.” If you’re a fan of either genre (or, like me, preferably both) you will pr

obably like this experience quite a lot. The creators got the slick look and foreboding mood of Ridley Scott’s original masterpiece just right, something that can be surprisingly challenging (as the latest films in the franchise painfully demonstrated, but let’s not go there). This is all about building up suspense and atmosphere, and even during my relatively short test-drive it managed to do that in spite of some bug issues (haha).

Miner Difficulties by Through The Waterfall

The dark is a very scary place….. better bring a light.

This was an interesting example of creators trying to experiment with storytelling and narrative rather than merely focusing on world-building. This uses various mechanisms (such as assigning you a bird “guide” to help steer you in the right direction. Unfortunately I lost my bird and it didn’t come back, leaving me rather lost…

Joyride by Alex

Follow the path , don’t stray . Keep on walking all the way. Studio Skye presents a Halloween journey to oblivion.

Joyride felt like the most multi-faceted and surprising experience of them all. It kept me constantly guessing from the moment when it first had me ducking to avoid the phantom cars rushing towards me. The landscape changes all the time, shifting from realistic visuals to Tim Burton-esque surreal tableaux. When I finally had to move on to the next experience on my list, it was with some regret, as it definitely felt like there was a lot left to explore here.

Linden Lab plans on integrating Windows Mixed Reality HMDs with Sansar
Share on X

Linden Lab acknowledges the issues I raised regarding processing power, as well as the barriers that the high price and setup difficulty of HMDs pose, but overall Laurin sounded an upbeat note on the consumer VR space:

“It’s exciting to see all the activity in the VR hardware market, not only with new HMD options, but also with more VR-capable computers,” he told me when I asked about the release of Microsoft’s Mixed Reality Headsets. “We’ve been experimenting with some of the Windows Mixed Reality headsets, and do plan to make it possible to use Sansar with them in the future,” he confirmed.

Laurin also seems unconcerned with the growing competition in the Social VR space, and tells me that they were actually encouraged by the recent Microsoft acquisition of AltspaceVR.

“It was sad to see Altspace closing due to financial difficulties, and we think it’s great for their community and our industry overall that Microsoft has picked them up. It’s encouraging to see very large companies recognizing the value and potential of the medium of social VR,” he says.

If Sansar is to become (as is their ambition) the dominant social VR platform and the standard building, sharing and monetizing content in the medium, there are certainly issues that need to be addressed. Yet considering this is still such early days, I think it’s fair to say it’s good to see the progress that has been made, and to enjoy a few thrills along the way.

In this article for Scientific American we look at how spatial audio will take immersive technology to a new level.

Virtual reality’s goal is to fully immerse a person in a digital landscape, triggering the same kinds of physical and psychological reactions they would experience in the real world. In virtual reality (VR) parlance, this is called “presence”—a mental state in which people recall VR experiences as if they had actually occurred. Computer graphics have improved dramatically in recent years, and advances in haptic, or touch, VR technology are beginning to allow users to feel sensations such as temperature, pressure and vibrations. For VR to really take hold of a person, however, a dynamic soundscape is essential.

Creating a dynamic soundscape is essential for immersion
Share on X

One of the most significant developments in VR sound is “spatial audio,” which is designed to mimic the pitch, volume, reverberation level and other audio cues the brain would expect during a real-world experience. “With our hearing we can sense what happens in those directions around us where we cannot see, [such as] car tires screeching behind us, and react—jump out of the way—without the need for visual input,” says Kai Havukainen, senior product manager for audio at Nokia Technologies, which is developing spatial audio technology for some of the company’s devices.

Everybody is still learning how powerful spatial audio can be
Share on X

Spatial audio allows VR programmers to create content whose sounds can come from any direction, says Tom Smurdon, audio design manager for Oculus VR, owned by Facebook. “There’s wind in the trees above your head, the sound of water coming from a river at your feet and now there’s sound from somebody sitting right next to you, whispering in your ear,” he says. “Everybody is still learning how powerful spatial audio can be.”

Shifting Soundscapes

“Spatial audio, in its most basic form, emulates how we perceive sound in the real world,” says Brian Yessian, chief creative officer and partner of sound design company Yessian Music. “If we are in a room and someone in front of me is speaking and I turn my head to the left, then my right ear is going to pick up more of the voice and my left ear will [hear] less,” he explains. “Or if something falls behind me, I know to look back because our audio senses pick up on the fact that it was actually behind me.” Spatial audio achieves that effect in VR using software algorithms that manipulate a program’s sound wave frequencies, creating audio levels that become louder or softer depending on the user’s distance from a virtual object. The sound also shifts from one headphone speaker to the other as the person moves their head from side to side or as the virtual objects move on their own.

Makers of VR headsets have begun to embrace immersive soundscapes as a way to improve the quality of the virtual experience. The new Nokia 8 smartphone, for example, includes OZO Audio software that uses the device’s multiple microphones to record video that has surround-sound qualities when heard through headphones. Spatial sound is also a major feature of the Microsoft’s new Windows Mixed Reality head-mounted displays, which go on sale later this month. Mixed reality is essentially a hybrid of VR and augmented reality that relies on cameras and other sensors to integrate digital objects into the real world or real objects to be embedded in a virtual world.

Microsoft already makes a mixed-reality headset with spatial audio called the HoloLens, but that device is targeted at software developers and corporate users. The HoloLens price also starts at $3,000, several times the cost of the consumer-targeted Mixed Reality headset. Microsoft has also made spatial audio part of Windows 10, which means any device running that version of the operating system will be able to play dynamic sound when headphones are used. The new Windows Mixed Reality and HoloLens headsets offer very different user experiences. The HoloLens has a transparent display that projects vivid holograms on top of real-world environments and is a fully self-contained computer that allows the user to move around without being restricted by cables. The new Mixed Reality headset plugs into a PC and has an opaque display similar to that of the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.

Microsoft already makes a mixed-reality headset with spatial audio called the HoloLens, but that device is targeted at software developers and corporate users
Share on X

Microsoft developed its spatial audio algorithms after studying different ear shapes and the way in which a person’s brain via the inner and outer ears locates the source of a sound in three dimensions. The goal was to better understand how they affect a person’s sound perception. “We’ve also done a lot of work in modeling how audio bounces and reverberates off the environment,” says Noel Cross, Microsoft principal software engineering lead, who has worked on both the HoloLens and the new Mixed Reality devices.

“Different size rooms give you different levels of comfort as a human, and if things don’t match your expectations in terms of [what] they should sound like, you instinctively feel quite uncomfortable.”

Cross and his team took those lessons into account when designing the interface for Microsoft’s new consumer headset. Instead of presenting users with a start menu or screen when they don the device, they begin their experience in a virtual house located on a cliff by the sea, where they are then free to wander its three different floors. Users interact with that setting much the same way they would stare at pictures or TV screens in the rooms of a real house—and for that to make sense, Cross says the developers had to get the sound element just right. Oculus likewise has its users begin in the same location—sort of like a VR home page—each time they use the device.

The Sweet Spot

Earlier efforts at “3-D audio”—a precursor to spatial audio—were very limited in that they were designed for PCs in the 1990s, Cross says. The speakers were typically located on either side of the computer monitor, and the sound was immersive if the users sat in a “sweet-spot zone in the middle” and did not move, he says. “Even with headphones in earlier experiences, as you moved your head, the sounds wouldn’t stay locked in the context of the world but would stay fixed relative to your head,” Cross adds.

Earlier efforts at 3-D audio—a precursor to spatial audio—were very limited in that they were designed for PCs in the 1990s
Share on X

Given that humans are hardwired to pay attention to sound and instinctively use it to map their surroundings, find points of interest and assess potential danger, it is hard to overstate the usefulness of spatial audio for VR. As virtual environments move to the mainstream in education, training and health care—including the treatment of phobias and trauma via virtual reality exposure therapy—users will want to fully engage their senses.
