By Dawn Richcreek VP Marketing at Condusiv Technologies

Businesses depend on fast data. Fast data requires systems that are tuned and optimized for speed. Even new, “modern”, and expensive systems will slow if not set-up to dynamically accelerate data for maximum performance.

Causes of Data and Throughput Slows

There are 2 severe I/O inefficiencies that cause performance and reliability problems, robbing 30-40% of your throughput. First, is the windows file system tends to break up writes into separate storage I/Os which causes I/O characteristics that are much smaller, more fractured, and more random than they need to be. Second is storage I/O contention, also known as the I/O Blender Effect, which happens when you have multiple systems all sharing the same storage resource. Performance is penalized twice by these storage I/O inefficiencies causing systems to process workloads about 50% slower than they should.

DymaxIO Fast Data Software

DymaxIO is fast data software. It is the most cost-effective, easy, and indispensable solution for increased throughput and accelerated I/O performance, so systems and applications run at peak speed. DymaxIO utilizes AI (artificial intelligence) to detect and deploy the appropriate performance enhancement technologies for the exact individual system so organizations can boost performance without overspending on hardware.

DymaxIO eliminates the two big I/O inefficiencies in Windows environments that generate a minimum of 30-40% of noisy I/O traffic causing performance and reliability problems. By installing DymaxIO organizations can expect an immediate performance boost in virtualized environments, MS-SQL workloads, Oracle on Windows, ERP, VDI, EHR (MEDITECH), Business Intelligence (BI) apps, CRM, Exchange, SharePoint, file servers, backup, and more.

Condusiv Technologies guarantees that you will get better than new performance from systems using DymaxIO.

Even Faster Than New

DymaxIO further accelerates data for maximum I/O performance with its patented IntelliMemory® a DRAM read caching engine that establishes a tier-0 cache strategy to serve hot reads from idle, available DRAM that is otherwise unused. This engine operates automatically and dynamically in the background, which means no tuning is required. Nothing has to be allocated for cache since DymaxIO dynamically adjusts moment-by-moment to only what is otherwise unused, so there is never an issue of memory contention. Systems commonly serve 50% of their read traffic from DRAM with just 4GB of available memory. If a system is memory constrained at any moment then DymaxIO’s caching engine backs off entirely. Condusiv guarantees that you will get better than new performance from systems using DymaxIO.

Don’t Overspend on Hardware

“I developed Diskeeper 34 years ago because SysAdmins were spending their weekends doing ‘backup-and-restore’ to fix performance problems due to fragmentation,” said Craig Jensen Condusiv CEO. “We have come a long way since then. We have the best engineers on the planet who have consistently evolved and improved our software from automatic defrag on spinning disks to fragmentation prevention, to multiple, patented technologies to optimize performance in virtual environments, on all-flash, and in the cloud. New DymaxIO automatically detects the type of hardware on which it is installed and deploys the appropriate performance enhancement technologies for that exact individual system so organizations can boost performance without overspending on hardware.

SSDs, all-flash, hyper-converged, and cloud platforms

DymaxIO dynamically accelerates data for maximum I/O performance, no matter the underlying storage. By solving I/O inefficiencies at the source, DymaxIO improves application performance, increases throughput 30-40%, reduces latency, increases VDI capacity, reduces timeouts and crashes, shortens backups, improves data transfer rates and extends hardware lifecycles – on disks, SSDs, all-flash, hyper-converged, and cloud platforms.

“By making sure that DymaxIO will adapt to your specific workload and having studied what kinds of I/Os amplify the I/O Blender Effect, we were able to add intelligence to specifically go after those I/Os,” said Rick Cadruvi Condusiv Chief Architect. “We take a global view. We aren’t limited to a specific application or workload. While we do have technologies that shine under certain workloads, such as transactional SQL applications, our goal is to optimize the entire network of systems. That’s the only way to overcome the I/O Blender Effect.”

DymaxIO Key Features

Condusiv Technologies makes software designed for virtual, cloud, and physical server environments that renders Windows servers faster and more reliable. The newly released DymaxIO – available on annual subscription SaaS model – provides an easy and cost-effective solution for fast data, increased throughput, and accelerated I/O performance so systems and applications run at peak performance for as long as possible.

New AI Intelligent Detection and Adaption: Diskeeper, SSDkeeper, and V-locity have been combined into a single product that intelligently detects and adapts to its operating environment using artificial intelligence.

New Condusiv Management Console: the new management console will manage all Condusiv software.

IntelliWrite® patented write optimization technology: automatically prevents excessively small, fractured, random writes and reads that harms performance due to the severe inefficiency in the native hand-off of data between the Windows OS and underlying storage.

IntelliMemory® patented read I/O optimization technology: intelligently caches hot read requests from server memory that is otherwise idle and unused.

InvisiTasking® patented intelligent scheduling technology: allows all the DymaxIO “background” operations within the server to run with zero resource impact on current production by only leveraging idle CPU cycles and memory.

Benefits Dashboard: The “time saved” dashboard demonstrates the value by showing the amount of I/O traffic offloaded from storage, the percentage of read and write I/O traffic offloaded, and the resulting time saved to any one system or group of systems.

The promise of emerging technologies such as VR, AR, Robotics and AI can only be realized by next-generation end device connectivity. At #MWC19 Inseego gave Tech Trends a glimpse of what this future could look like.

Big data is getting even bigger. The average consumer will access and generate vast amounts of information over the course of any normal day. Yet power users, or “prosumers” like myself who also rely on data for all their work, need (or at least want) even more connectivity than your regular 4G devices are able to offer.

Big data is getting even bigger #Making5GReal @MiFi #MiFiIQ
Share on X

At the same time, emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, robotics, 5G and IoT are all converging to enable use cases that will dramatically impact business and the way we all live. Enterprise and business use cases such as Virtual Reality and telemedicine also require military-grade data security and encryption.

The average consumer will access and generate vast amounts of information every day #Making5GReal @MiFi #MiFiIQ
Share on X

High throughput, speed and bandwidth, combined with low latency have long been the promises of 5G. A lot of folks in the industry have talked about that in theory, but with real-world trials now happening with various operators, what kind of performance can actually be delivered in reality?

Inseego has a rich history in advancing connectivity dating back from the 1990’s, although you might be more familiar with their previous name of Novatel Wireless. Two years ago the company famous for inventing the MiFi® and the mobile hotspot category rebranded as Inseego, but regardless of the name they operate under, this is a company with some serious pedigree where it comes to delivering next-generation end device connectivity. Having quietly powered the 2G, 3G and 4G revolutions, they are now delivering 5G through their MiFi IQ technlology which is set to become the overarching 5G technology device brand for both mobile and fixed (in-home/in-office) wireless – for consumers as well as prosumers.

Power users rely on data for work and will need more connectivity than your average 4G devices is able to offer #Making5GReal @MiFi #MiFiIQ
Share on X

A large number of Tier One telecommunications operators around the world are actively working with the company on bringing their 5G NR services to life – both mobile (hotspots) and fixed/in-home 5G (routers, gateways and more) – through MiFi IQ device technology throughout 2019. Availability with numerous carriers are in the works, although Verizon, Telstra, Optus and several others have already made public announcements.

While mobile 5G (hotspots) will bring next-generation networks to life on-the-go, in-home 5G is already emerging as an alternative to traditional in-home broadband internet from cable providers. In fact, there have been reports in the United States that early customers of Verizon 5G Home, the leading carrier’s recently launched fixed wireless service, are converts who previously purchased their broadband Internet connectivity from traditional cable companies.

Whether it’s their emerging in-home or mobile devices, MiFi IQ 5G NR technology has been performing in real-world trial scenarios
Share on X

Whether it’s their emerging in-home or mobile devices, MiFi IQ 5G NR technology has been performing in real-world trial scenarios. In fact, data points to the devices already having achieved more than 2 Gbps of speed and sub-10 milliseconds of latency in multiple component carrier aggregation (CA) scenarios. This was also showcased in Barcelona, with MiFi IQ 5G hotspots being the only devices of their kind to be running live on 5G NR network infrastructure at the conference.

To showcase the capabilities of the MiFi IQ 5G NR hotspot at MWC, they performed the world’s longest live 5G data call alongside network infrastructure partner Ericsson, streaming video and other data for almost seven hours at the show.

“This is an exciting milestone for 5G NR. And our MiFi IQ 5G NR hotspot is the only hotspot to be running live at Mobile World Congress this week,” said Ashish Sharma Chief Marketing Officer, EVP IoT & Mobile Solutions at Inseego.

While the MiFi IQ lines are focused on consumers and prosumers, Ctrack by Inseego and Skyus by Inseego highlights the convergence of 5G and IoT device-to-cloud solutions.

IoT device-to-cloud intelligent solutions include Ctrack by Inseego (this is a widely used IoT device-to-cloud telematics/fleet tracking solution around the world – including with prominent fleets, airlines like Lufthansa/KLM Equipment Services/etc.) and Skyus by Inseego – Industrial IoT 5G/LTE gateways/routers/etc. as well as intelligent cloud software.

Inseego has a rich history in advancing connectivity dating back from the 1990’s where they were known as Novatel #Making5GReal @MiFi #MiFiIQ
Share on X

MiFi IQ 5G Fixed Wireless

MiFi IQ technology is powering 5G NR in-home/in-office deployment – starting with Verizon 5G Home, Optus in Australia and expanding worldwide. Routers/gateways and other equipment brings 5G “indoors,” giving consumers/prosumers another choice for broadband Internet service. The next generation in home connectivity will be available to areas that aren’t currently served adequately by cable companies, adding extra benefits like superior bandwidth and security. Now, it’s coming from the air instead of cables.

A number of Tier One operators around the world are working with Inseego to bring their 5G NR services to life #Making5GReal @MiFi #MiFiIQ
Share on X

SoftBank-backed CloudMinds also marked the global debut of its technology powered by the HARIX Cloud Brain platform and connected with MiFi IQ 5G NR technology at MWC.

At MWC I checked out their XR-1 robot in action. This is the first humanoid service robot with vision-controlled manipulation capabilities powered by Cloud AI via 5G connectivity. It features Smart Compliant Actuator (SCA) technology for precision grasping, and Human Augmented Robotics Intelligence using the company’s eXtreme Reality (HARIX) platform, the robot can be controlled remotely by a person in a different location wearing VR goggles, but can also perform a range of intricate tasks autonomously. such as threading a needle or shaking hands with someone, applying the right amount of pressure as they do so. These “tactile capability” tasks might seem simple, but are actually incredibly difficult to perform to what would be deemed an acceptable level of competency in an average human.

One of the robots at the show, named Rachel, was able to find and grab a bottle as it was placed around a table, then “serve” it to a guest. Two other robots were performing an intricate dance with, I have to say, considerably more grace and rhythm than I’ve seen on many a wedding dance floor.

All of these demonstrations were great fun to watch, but the point they were demonstrating is that in order to enable all that to happen, the robots needed to be plugged into a high throughput/speed infrastructure with virtually no delay (latency) all of which were brilliantly delivered by MiFi IQ 5G connectivity. It helps to paints a vibrant picture of how cloud artificial intelligence, robotics and 5G connectivity are coming together to transform various industries and society as a whole.

Hybrid cloud has become one of the hottest topics in tech, but what are the advantages of a multi-cloud approach?

By Mark Baker, Field Product Manager at Canonical

Analyst firm 451 Research estimates that 69% of enterprises will be running hybrid IT environments by 2019, while Gartner predicts that 90% of organisations will adopt hybrid infrastructure management capabilities by 2020. Hybrid is clearly here to stay.

Yet the hybrid cloud is not the only trend in this space capturing the attention of CIOs and CTOs around the world. In recent months, it has been overtaken by its close relative ‘multi-cloud’, with 79% of businesses already admitting to working with more than one cloud provider. As such, it is widely considered to be the future of cloud computing, opening up new opportunities for innovation, such as enabling organisations to ‘fail fast’ and rapidly roll out new services to customers.

From both a business agility and cost-efficiency point of view, achieving a balance of public and private cloud is proving to be a winning tactic
Share on X

As the name suggests, multi-cloud refers to the use of multiple cloud vendors and providers within a business architecture – across a mix of public and private platforms – thereby enabling organisations to separate different workloads into different environments according to their specific requirements.

From both a business agility and cost-efficiency point of view, achieving a balance of both public and private cloud options is proving to be a winning tactic. However, there are still some people who are yet to be fully convinced.

Multi-cloud refers to the use of multiple cloud vendors and providers within a business architecture - across a mix of public and private platforms
Share on X

Navigating cloudy skies

Perhaps the most obvious reason for hesitation around multi-cloud adoption is that deploying cloud platforms and services from multiple vendors can be seen as a rather complex process, especially when it comes to efficiently weaving multiple different clouds together in a way that doesn’t hinder productivity or innovation.

The inherent technical challenges of multi-cloud deployments have the potential to cause difficulties and amplify existing business pressures, especially for those organisations that lack the in-house skills required to carry out such a transformation.

This is something many businesses have quickly realised as they have continued along their deployment journeys. Indeed, technical and skills challenges were identified as critical learnings from managing multiple clouds by more than half (57%) of senior IT leaders in a recent study.

The inherent technical challenges of multi-cloud deployments have the potential to cause difficulties and amplify existing business pressures
Share on X

This followed closely behind integrating legacy systems (62%) and simply understanding the new technology (61%), both of which highlight the importance of finding the right partners and properly planning deployments as opposed to jumping in headfirst.

Finally, as with virtually any technology in today’s climate, security is also a concern. Some businesses are under the impression that integrating multiple different systems into one environment has the potential to result in security holes, leaving them more vulnerable to cyber attacks. With strict legislation such as the new General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) changing the way businesses think about data security and privacy, it’s an issue that is at the forefront of many minds.

But this is just one – somewhat misguided – side of the multi-cloud discussion. When it comes to transforming with cloud technologies, there are several reasons why multi-cloud is proving itself to be the correct end game for businesses in all industries.

Some businesses are under the impression that integrating multiple different systems leaves them more vulnerable to cyber attacks
Share on X

The go-to game plan

So, why multi-cloud? Firstly, it means businesses can avoid vendor lock-in and reduce their dependence on a single vendor. This has become a key concern for the majority of enterprises, especially those that have found themselves having to rely on traditional vendors that aren’t able to offer a complete cloud package.

Not only does a multi-cloud approach enable businesses to leverage the best of every cloud platform available, it could also save them significant sums of money. Customers are no longer at the mercy of a vendor’s decision to increase costs, and with freedom of choice comes the ability to maximise ROI and become much more cost efficient.

According to a recent survey, cost optimisation was seen as the biggest driver to adopting a multi-cloud setup, with the flexibility to spread across both public and private platforms and spin up whatever resources are needed to solve specific needs optimising the return on cloud investments. This is true from both a CapEx and OpEx perspective. Businesses that have long-term, steady compute requirements can run this privately and keep their costs predictable, while still having the flexibility to turn to the public cloud for any variable capacity needs.

Customers are no longer at the mercy of a vendor’s decision to increase costs, and with freedom of choice comes the ability to maximise ROI and become much more cost efficient
Share on X

Secondly, using a mix-and-match approach enables organisations to effectively leverage extended capabilities, as they can pick the best products to suit specific business needs. Different vendors will naturally innovate in slightly different areas, meaning businesses taking a multi-cloud approach can exploit developments as soon as they become available rather than having to wait for their vendor to catch up.

Cost optimisation is the biggest driver to adopting a multi-cloud setup
Share on X

Ultimately, in today’s technology landscape every institution should have a plan to operate in a multi-cloud way. The journey may not be entirely straightforward, but a balance of public and private platforms is quickly proving to be the ideal deployment option for enterprises.

That’s why, for any serious business looking to be a leader in its field, establishing a multi-cloud environment simply has to be the end game.

Using a mix-and-match approach enables organisations to effectively leverage extended capabilities, as they can pick the best products to suit specific business needs
Share on X

Was there ever a market for just five computers, and is there now?

By Adam Tamburini, International SVP at e-shelter

According to a quote attributed to the then CEO of IBM, Thomas J Watson Jr, in 1943 he believed that ‘…there is a world market for about five computers.’ In fact, Watson may never have said anything of the kind, but that’s a different story. The fact remains, this is often quoted as an early prediction for technology and computing. But has it come true?

A famous quote attributed to the then CEO of IBM, Thomas J Watson Jr, in 1943 reportedly says he believed that there was a world market for about five computers
Share on X

Obviously, there are now many more than five computers, and equally obviously, the sheer volume of modern devices is something that nobody foresaw in 1943. Indeed, the belief that personal computers would never catch on in a big way, and that computing would remain primarily a business and political tool, persisted for several decades after that. So, if we are to take Watson’s words literally and assume he was using the term ‘computers’ in the sense that we use it today, then of course he was wrong.

The belief that personal computers would never catch on in a big way, and that computing would remain primarily a business and political tool persisted for several decades
Share on X

Or was he?

The early 1940s were crucial to computing, and the decade saw many innovations, frequently driven by the demands of war. The first example of remote access computing occurred in 1940 with a demonstration in New York of the Complex Number Calculator, and this was followed a year later by Germany’s development of the Z3, the world’s first programmable, automatic computing device. Also in 1941, the UK debuted the Bombe, a computer designed by Alan Turing to decrypt Axis communications during World War II.

The world had to wait until the early 1970s for anything that resembled a personal computing device of the type we use today
Share on X

A number of further machines, that might loosely be called ‘computers’, followed. But unlike today’s computers, almost all of them were so massive they required a room to themselves, and almost all were designed to oversee and manage large-scale operations of some kind. The world had to wait until the early 1970s for anything that resembled a personal computing device of the type we use today.

So, to put Watson’s ‘quote’ into context, perhaps he foresaw a future where only five large-scale computing applications were required, to handle large-scale data and functionality of national and international importance. And if that is the case, perhaps he was closer to the truth than has been acknowledged.

To put Watson’s ‘quote’ into context, perhaps he foresaw a future where only five large-scale computing applications were required
Share on X

Back to the mainframe

For in many ways, even though there are so many applications, devices and uses of what might broadly be termed ‘computers’ now, in broad terms the world is returning to the old habits of having a ‘mainframe’ system, a large-scale, central repository of processing power and data handling capability. Only today, we call them ‘data centres’, ‘large scale IT service providers’ or even ‘the cloud’.

If the period between the 1980s and 2010s saw the explosion of home computing, the Internet and technology in general, it could be argued that the world has grown beyond that, now. The Internet is so vast, so flexible and full of potential, so socially and politically important and omnipresent, it has taken on an identity of its own. The idea that it can be conceived of as merely a series of computers talking to each other, seems faintly ridiculous. The world of technology has become bigger than was ever predicted, the volume of data vaster, and we need bigger concepts to capture these phenomena.

The world of technology has become bigger than was ever predicted, the volume of data vaster, and we need bigger concepts to capture them
Share on X

One of the biggest of these big concepts is cloud computing, which has evolved partly in response to the proliferation of technology and associated data. In one sense, the cloud in all its forms is the modern mainframe, albeit a vast, behemoth, super-mainframe. The sheer volume of data held in the cloud is mind-boggling, and more is being added daily as businesses and individuals migrate their data and applications.

We're returning to the old habits of having a mainframe system, a large-scale, central repository of processing power and data handling capability. Only today, we call them data centres or the cloud
Share on X

Who, and where, is the cloud?

The cloud, of course, comprises of organised provision, usually in the form of servers, and usually housed in a data centre. Are the data centres, therefore, actually the mainframes of today? Are these the super-computers that Watson foresaw?

Alternatively, perhaps we should look to the biggest of the providers to fill this role. The hyperscale cloud providers have brought cloud computing to the masses (quite literally), through provision of a range of user-friendly, easily accessible services that suit everybody from the teenager with an android phone who likes to edit their selfies, to the largest of businesses requiring dedicated server space, assured regulatory compliance and management. Are the only five ‘computers’ that the world ultimately needs, to be found among these companies?

In one sense, the cloud in all its forms is the modern mainframe, albeit a vast, behemoth, super-mainframe
Share on X

Of course, which, if any, of these answers you choose depends largely on semantics and interpretation. The world of technology has changed so vastly since 1943 that it would be astounding if anybody could have predicted the current, cloud-based, world.

But there really is no doubt that the world is moving back towards centrally-managed provision in computing, simply because the volume of data, and potential for its application, is so great. What is more, big data is not the only driving force. Artificial Intelligence, machine learning, all of the great events that lie just over the horizon are just as dependent upon well-organised data provision as the smallest of businesses, and it’s hard to imagine a time when this will not be the case.

Artificial Intelligence, machine learning, all of the great events that lie just over the horizon are just as dependent upon well-organised data provision as the smallest of businesses
Share on X

Whether this is anywhere close to what Watson had in mind, of course, is another question entirely…

From Mixed Reality to apps that help patients cope with chronic health conditions, students from all over the world pitched their world-changing ideas at the #ImagineCup hosted at Microsoft’s HQ

The winners of the 15th anniversary edition of the Imagine Cup were just announced in Redmond this morning. Xglu from the Czech Republic developed an app that gives children with diabetes a cheap, easy and reliable way to measure and monitor their glucose levels.

The focus of the Microsoft Imagine Cup is on taking ideas from concept to market, asking how you create value
Share on X

Instead of lugging around bulky batteries and embarrassing looking medical equipment, kids have small, cute attachment (about the size of a business card) which links to smartphones and takes accurate measurements in seconds.

Not only that, but the whole process is turned into a game, where children collect strawberries as they complete what – let’s face it – is not traditionally a fun task, i.e. pricking your finger and taking blood. And because all the data is loaded automatically to the cloud, it gives both children and parents a much better way to monitor their condition in the long term.

And this was far from unique to Xglu, as this year’s Imagine Cup was very much a cloud-first competition, with all teams required to incorporate it into their projects and $125,000 Azure grant awarded to the winner in addition to the $100,000 prize.

Over the last fifteen years the Imagine Cup program has involved over two million students from over 190 countries, but this is about much more than a bunch of clever ideas competing for a cash jackpot. After two days of watching impossibly clever young people pitch and demo every kind of tech, it became pretty clear that they – and their hosts – meant business.

This is not an accelerator, and these budding entrepreneurs are not officially competing for funding (although doing well here certainly won’t hurt their chances) but the focus is on taking ideas from concept to market, and asking the tough questions about how do you create value from a product, as Anthony Salcito – Microsoft’s Vice President of Worldwide Education – explained:

These ideas are enabled by real needs, and we want to move beyond specific narrow solutions towards those which have a much broader impact.

Small problems often add up to a lot of wasted time; A point that the team from Morocco – who had invented a solution to help match drivers with the nearest available parking space – drove home when they told the audience that the average Parisian will lose a year’s worth of their lives looking for parking spaces.

One thing I found rather refreshing was seeing that different teams were often working on very similar projects. There were two apps (Blink and Orai) which offered personalized feedback to improve a user’s public speaking skills and at least 3 teams (From Brazil, Mexico and the US) focusing on analysing and monitoring water quality, which can have high impact on farming, aquaculture and disease prevention.

It’s not so much about coming up with a unique idea, but executing it in the real world
Share on X

At the end of the day that’s a much more accurate reflection of how the tech ecosystem actually works. It’s not so much about coming up with a unique idea, but pushing past that “Eureka” moment, putting in the hard graft, and executing it in the real world.
